Playstation Home Not Open Till Fall of 08

Sony just announced today that the public beta for Playstation Home will not, I repeat, not be open to all till fall of 2008. Here is what Sony has said,

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it will expand the Closed Beta testing for PLAYSTATION®Home in Summer 2008, inviting a further number of registrants from the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) users. Following completion of the Expanded Closed Beta test, the PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service will commence in Fall 2008.

“We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today,” said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PLAYSTATION Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation® tradition.”

The PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service that will become available in Fall 2008 will be built around providing new and fun community gaming experiences, such as connecting PlayStation games with Home and providing places and items from the games.

Details of the Closed Beta testing features, registration for the test and the opening of the service will be announced as they become available.

I don’t know about you guys, but this is extremely disappointing to me, especially with all the rumors of the past couple weeks that it might have been just around the corner.

this is just bull im sick of waiting for sunny to pull its finger out whats the point in having a ps3 if all we do is wait for stuff microsoft get things done when they say so either sony carnt do there job as good or they just dont give a dam

  • Razmael

    Well, crap.

I honestly don’t know why they bother giving us release dates at all – might as well just say “It may be ready at some point, but don’t hold your breath”.

Just wait; August will roll around and then they’ll delay it until Spring 2009…and then Summer 2009…and then Christmas 2009…and then ‘early’ 2010…and then maybe they’ll just give up and hope we’ve forgotten it in our complete frustration.

I understand the need to improve the product, but the decision to keep the beta closed is going to work against them in the long run. Whatever Home is, it will completely miss the mark, because with each successive delay the bar is set still higher; to the point where the wait just can’t be worth it – we’ll be disappointed regardless of how good it is.

    “I waited 3 years for THIS?” >_<

I think Sony is Understaffed when it comes to the People creating Home. I think that if they released Home now people would be dissappointed and it would be a gimmick to them and they would use it for a week and never use it again, that is something Sony doesn’t want happening so they need more time. The truth is though like Razmael said above by time Home does appear people either won’t care or will have to high expectations and end up disappointed.

I think the reason this happend is Sony needed something MAJOR that differentiated it from the XBOX 360 and that was supposed to me Home. Problem is that from the Moment they annouced it, it was probably only a an idea on paper or a Drawing Board and they now don’t want to rush it now. If only Sony wouldn’t have annouced it, then our expectations wouldn’t be so unrealisticly high right now.

    Well that’s Fony for you…
“the next gen doesn’t start until we say so”

Remember when they said that the system would be a sell out and if you could find them on the shop shelfs that they would pay you double…

Rumble? Last “last-gen”, then way are they selling it again…what about the pioneer buyers? Go and spend more bucks on Fony and ditch your original Sixais?

I’m not buying the PS3 until its at the 200 mark.

And each day I thank myself for thinking like that.

oh for god’s sake. Just learn patience… It will help everyone out. I don’t know about you but i would prefer to wait for something that is gonna be perfect then a half arsed approach to what could be an amazing experience. Sony may always be a bit slower than the xbox but they always deliver a solid product. The ps3 is an ever evolving console and will always do well. I also own an xbox 360 or should i say have owned 3 since they always mess up and the xbox live is constantly down. Psn has never been down. I’m sure home will be worth the wait!

    Whaaaaaa……my PP hurts!!!

Go switch over to the 360, and deal with the nickel-n-diming BS Money$oft likes to pull. Then after you’ve been nickel-n-dimed to death, your 360 can die on you for no other reason than the fact that it’s a shoddily built piece of crap.

Home will be free….so stop your whining you petulant little babies.

Well, well, well…. This is Living? No, this is waiting.

I was about to give in and get a PS3 soon…but honestly I just dont feel the need to rush out and get one. I want it to at least come down under $300 I think…then and only then will I get a PS3. Once they told me that I should work longer and harder to pay for their over priced machine they lost me as a customer for quite some time. Those comments still stick in my craw, and are validated even more everytime they delay a title or service, etc.

Sure the PS3 is a good machine…but its not “that” good that I should forgive or look the other way given how many times they have slapped Joe Public in the face.

No one should be bitching this much about a dam game product. If so its a dam good sign you all need to step out side and smell the fresh air dam bed wetters cry me a river.

I will say this non of you clearly understand that the concept of HOME was very originally. Then sony found out that there was such a huge amount of people excited for it wanting a full virtual world. Meaning that the very basic HOME concept had to be detailed to take it into that virtual world so for the time being go play some dam sports in this summer right around the corner.

  • craig

Haha the first line I was meaning to say. I will say this non of you clearly understand that the concept of HOME was originally a very basic concept.

  • Razmael

    Hey, we already HAVE PS3s.

It doesn’t make a speck of difference to the core consumer whether Home comes out now or a year from now…we’ll still have it.

Sure, we’re bitching about the wait, but that’s Sony’s fault – they got us all excited about it WAY too soon…jumped the gun on PR and now we’re suffering. Ok, boo hoo.

The real problem is that Sony’s chance to wow potential buyers is slipping away. People heard about Home and got interested…now they’re losing interest. Not to mention that Nintendo and Micro$oft now have more time to come up with their own bright ideas to pre-empt Home and drastically reduce its effectiveness and appeal to new customers.

Maybe introducing an unfinished Home in open beta NOW would be less than impressive, but at least it would be out there; and Sony would get access to a much wider range of feedback – which would mean they could improve it faster with successive firmware updates.

    ..Just my 2 cents.

:'( I Fucking wanted Home this year

  • Matt

who cares, home is just gonna be a bunch of teenage guys and older fat men who have no lives running around with each other inviting other guys over to their apt. its not a social network its gonna be one big homosexual club …

  • I was going to get the gun metal PS3 this year but seriously after looking at all I am going to be playing on my 360 this year I think I might wait until God of War 3 or Final Fantasy hits. I just dont feel the need to rush out and pick one up. I actually feel the need to grab a PSP before a PS3

UGH! Not this exchuse again, they have been saying this for past several months. Yes, we can all understand that they’re are some tweaks that need to refined so Home can be everything we want and more, but by delaying it over and over is just making people angry. And whats wrong with releasing the beta?. They’re treating the Beta like the full game. The point of a closed Beta is to get major kinks and screw-ups fixed, the point of and Open is to find minor flaws and suggest improvements. I believe this project has been in development for several years now and its still has major flaws in the programing?
But for some reason we see fully functional demo videos at conventions so we can see what Home is.
Maybe they just extended the release so they can give themselves some more time even though they are really close to finishing it.

  • The Major

I’ve been sitting and waiting for Home. Now whats funny is how everyone is so quick to attack Sony for doing something like oh I don’t know… making sure they’re making a strong service. As for the attacks on the PS3 directly. It’s got some serious hardware in it. Enough so that it could easily out power most of the computers you people are using. Take into consideration that the PS3 has a lot more to offer than the 360 or the Wii. The only thing it doesn’t offer is a cheap price tag and that’s because it’s the highest end system on the market that isn’t a dedicated computer, which those can cost you well over 10,000 dollars.

Cut Sony some slack folks. You’re just being down right childish and pathetic. An embarrassment to the gaming community. In the mean time now that news of it’s delay has hit I’m going to go about my daily life until Fall when I start checking in on it again.

  • I play a couple of virtual world games: 2nd Life and – they have been open to the public for years and each still have their quirks. Sony needs to open the Beta to all current/registered PS3 owners as of Spring 2008 – everyone else purchasing/registering on the PS3 after Spring 2008 should have to wait until this Fall to join the Beta…Nuff Said!!

Also, you guys better buy an InterCooler device to cool this box down. It is a very powerful machine and mine gets really hot – the cooling fans help out a lot!

  • Mocella

look, sony is just trying to make it better, this stuff isn’t as easy as it looks, i just got my ps3, and the longer they do this, the more people can buy the ps3, maybe they’re just waitting for the PS3 80GB to come out, that could be one reason why it’s taking so dam long,

you guys just need to relax!!!

  • Sometimes delays are good. I personally did not buy the PS3 just for home even though I cant wait for it to come out. Sit back and enjoy your console and remember you could always rent a couple of blue rays.

  • The 80gb did come out. I would know, I have one sitting next to my TV in the other room. Anyway, I believe that home will be one of the best things to happen to the PS3 yet, and developing it is only making it better. Even though I am sad that after waiting so long, I have to wait longer, I still am excited for it’s release.
