This week brings us the biggest release of the year to casual gamers, soccer moms and morning talk show hosts around the world. It also brings an iterative sports title and another first person shooter for the hardcore gamers.
Wii Fit (Wii)
Here is Nintendo’s version of a summer blockbuster. Wii Fit is selling out at many retailers and, at $89.99 a pop, Nintendo will be swimming in cash. From most accounts, if you are in decent to good shape this will be a complete waste, unless you want the balance board and are willing to just play aroumd with the “game” that comes bundled with it. If you are the oft stereotyped fat, basement dwelling gamer than this could be the thing for you.
UEFA Euro 2008 (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP) – Pick of the Week
EA probably shoots itself in the foot by releasing both FIFA, it’s flagship football franchise, and UEFA, the superior soccer game, each year. UEFA, beyond the solid gameplay and controls found in both, features several modes, including a card collecting game which places the players on the cards on your team as a kind of Pokemon meets fantasy soccer mashup, that give the game even more depth and replayability. If you’re a soccer fan than you need to pick this game up.
Not much to say about this one. The demo is available on the PlayStation Network but even that is not worth picking up. There are so many good first person shooters out there, why pick this bland, lifeless one up?
A karaoke game that is huge in Europe but has had a tough time getting a real foothold in America. Perhaps the recent success of music and rhythm games, like Rock Band which features vocals, may mean that SingStar will hit its stride in North America and take off. It may not be a smashing success but the game should find a home as a party game.
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (PC)
Another MMO for the PC that has garnered much attention but, probably, mostly due to the interest in MMOsnot necessarily in the game itself. This is not the next World of Warcraft and isn’t that all that matters?
What games are you picking up this week?
