New Psychological Study On Video Games

I would like to start this out with congratulating Steve on his baby.

Guys have you found it difficult to find a girl gamer or even try to get your own girl friend or wife into gaming? There maybe a psychological reason for this. I personally know a lot of girl that know how to play video games. In comparison though it ranged from music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band to The Sims. Why don’t more play, well more violent games?

If you’ve been paying attention to the gender of the people you meet playing online games or attending gaming conventions, you may have noticed there’s a pretty severe ratio imbalance. In a world that’s just slightly over half-composed of women, the videogame culture is composed of a proportional skew, dominated by men. But why?

A new article from the DailyMail (via GamePolitics) points out a new study from Stanford Professor Allan Reiss, which was published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research. The study claims that by measuring brain activity with an MRI scanner while subjects played videogames, striking gender differences were recorded. “The males were just a lot more motivated to succeed,” Reiss said. While both genders showed activity around the areas of the brain associated with reward and addiction, male brains were much more active in those areas. “I think it’s fair to say that males tend to be more intrinsically territorial,” Reiss added. “It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who historically are the conquerors and tyrants of our species.”

While the results are interesting, the study doesn’t address the subject of games that aren’t based around competition or score. With games like The Sims 2 and Nintendogs on the rise, we may yet see a culture shift in the videogame world.

It is my belief that males like video games for violence. Even though there are plenty of fun games without violence. Animal Crossing and Tetris are just a few you can name in that category. It boils down to what you like to play though mostly. As a guy gamer I just love violent video games.

Being older I realized everyone has different taste. So when I run into that girl that plays Halo, I feel like it is normal. One time I wore a Degeneration X (pro wrestling) T-shirt to school. It was strange not because I wore the shirt. It was strange because I never found some many girls at my school watch pro wrestling.  As I said though, everyone has different taste.

  • I think everyone just has their favourite genres… True FPS really don’t seem to interest lots of girls, self included. No matter how hard I try to be stealthy, I get shot and I die. I hide behind things. I get shot and I die. I run around. I get shot and I die. I think I just lack an understanding of what the hell I’m supposed to do to not die. I love RPGs, generally speaking, but I just can’t get the hang of FPS. Also, RPGs are pwettier, hehe.

  • Again this goes back to my age and different taste subject. It depends on what you like. Some girls just love to have that easy going pace and story telling of a Role-Playing Game. Then again some girls like to shoot someone in the head with a colt 44.
