“Wii” are number 1!

by Erik “Z thirteen07″ Johnsen

The NPD numbers for June are showing a strong continuing surge for the Nintendo Wii. Approximately 11M Wiis have been sold in the United States in the first 20 months of the console’s lifespan. This makes the Nintendo Wii the number 1 U.S. home console.

In a release from Nintendo, Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing said, “As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another.”

The Nintendo DS continues to march on as the number 1 game system overall with almost 800,000 units sold in June. The DS is rapidly approaching 21 million units sold in the U.S. alone.

The NPD report also show that six of the top 10 games sold in the U.S. were made for the two Nintendo systems. Guitar Hero® On Tour (No. 2), Wii Fit (No. 4), Wii Play (No. 5), Mario Kart® Wii (No 6.), LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures for Wii (No. 7) and LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures for DS (No. 9).

Microsoft and Sony recently announced new price cuts for specific versions of their Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles. It’ll be interesting to see if these cuts have any sort of impact on the juggernaut that is the two headed monster of the Wii and the DS.
