Speaking with the Mercury News, EA CEO John Riccitiello made public his feelings of regret that the game giant did not put more emphasis on the Wii at the beginning of this console generation.
“We typically figured out who the market leader was going to be before the start of the cycle and bet with our development resources on that platform. We made the wrong call there (by betting on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), which made this transition harder than it would otherwise be.”
Despite the amazing sales of the Wii, it has not translated to amazing sales for software, especially those made by third parties like EA. Previous iterations of EA Sports titles, Boogie and the very well reviewed Boom Blox all did very poorly on the Wii and there is no certainty that any game that is not published by Nintendo itself will do well.
Riccitiello and Co. at EA can all but bank on the core audience to purchase Madden, Spore, Mirror’s Edge, Dead Space and the like but can they really feel like they chose poorly when so many of their own titles have failed to sell on the Wii?
