“Summer of Arcade” kicks off with Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2! You could win 100,000 MS Points!

Yesterday Microsoft proclaimed this summer as the “Summer of Arcade” with the announcement of some of the greatest Xbox Live Arcade Games since launch (see press release below).  And starting today we at XBLRadio will also be celebrating the “Summer of Arcade”!  How you ask?  Each Wednesday before 5:00 am PST look for a post about that weeks arcade title.  This post will have multiple screen shots, videos and my quick impressions of the trial and/or full version.  This will be just a quick impression of the game and you can still expect a full review to come later in the week but it should provide you with more information to make a wise purchase!

This morning started it all off with the highly anticipated squeal to, arguable, the best XBLA title ever!

Quick Impressions:

Its Geometry Wars!  Seriously, based on the trial, Geometry Wars 2 looks and feels just like Geometry Wars RE that was released with the launch of the 360.  In the trial is open only one mode, Deadline, in which you have 3 minutes to score as many points as possible with unlimited eyes.  This maybe the case of a bad trial, but based on the below screenshots it looks to be more of the same, for $10, instead of the $5 Geometry Wars RE is.  Now GWRE2 does add more modes to the gameplay with:  Deadline, Evolved, King, Pacifism, Waves, and Sequence, but is these modes worth $5?  I let you decide!

I do want to point out that 2.5 hours after release and Rusty Ranchero has a high score of 5,580,365 points already!  As Geometry Wars was one of Rusty’s favorite games I can’t wait to hear his impressions of the game.

Back to the game…  With Geometry Wars RE 2 the developers had the perfect chance to add the one thing missing from Geometry Wars RE:  multiplayer!  Well they did, kinda!  If you are one of those gamers that still has “real world” friends then, by all means, invite 3 of them over and you can play Geometry Wars RE 2 locally together.  But try this over Live and you will be denied!  And this highlights Geometry Wars RE 2’s biggest flaw.  No Online Play!

As always I recommend to go try out the trial of Geometry Wars RE 2, also try the trial, or play a little, of the original Geometry Wars RE and if there is enough of a difference between them for you then pick up the newer, prettier Geometry Wars RE 2!  If not, I say, stick with the original!  Full Review on XBLRadio later this week!
