PN Question of the Week, Oct 12

37A10712-0A7E-4902-ADC1-C0DA98DD182D.jpgI was honestly surprised from last weeks question, the one about the Gears of War mid-night launch event, where we asked how many people were planning on attending their local midnight launch. There were a lot less “yeses” then what I thought there would be, with a vote of 9 people that are NOT going to attend and 5 that were. So the Gears of War 2 midnight launch is not as big of a deal as I thought, pretty interesting.

Anyways, lets get into this weeks question. NOT counting the games that are yet to come out this year, nor any of the betas (LittleBigPlanet) that have been released; what is your pick for “Game of the Year”? It can be on any console or PC or handheld.

This has been discussed all over the place lately. Glad to put my two cents in.

If there was any justice in the world, MGS4 would win. I don't know if Infected and all the other guys know but Metal Gear Online was going to be an entirely seperate game that you had to pay for until they decided to just throw it in with MGS4.

Regardless, GTA IV was more of the same formula except the fun factor…just like Halo 3…was extremely low. It's the same game all over again.

MGS4 reinvented itself. The game revolutionized the cut scene and provided a storyline that engendered nostalgia. The game play was fresh. The controls were amazingly tight. The ability to play the game at your own pace (either slow, stealthy or fast, bullet-spraying) that's what made this game so different than most. It not only lived up to the hype but it surpassed it.

I want to make this clear…MGS4 and Metal Gear Online are TWO DIFFERENT GAMES! They might be on the same disk but one doesn't dictate the other. The online portion plays nothing like MGS4 so you can't just say oh…it's drags the total package down.

The cherry on the top is that MGS4 didn't need trophies or achievements to entice the gaming populace. It didn't need DLC to sell the game. MGS4 FLAT OUT SOLD ITSELF.

GTA IV failed to do that this year. I've bought several GTA games in the past but I bought this one too. I've never bought or played Metal Gear Solid before but I bought MGS4. Yeah…yeah…it's a crime that I'll be recommitting when God of War 3 comes out. But right now…only one game is sitting on my gaming rack…and it doesn't have trophy support.

    MGS4 FTW!

There have been a lot of good games this year. But I've not played one that made me go OMG I NEED TO PLAY THIS GAME OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Granted I'm only going to be getting a PS3 in a couple of weeks so that may change. I could be funny and say "Too Human" but..

    Metal Gear Solid 4

We're not ruling out games that are just SP. We're talking about games that have an awesome SP, but fail miserably in the MP, i.e. MGS4. Yes, more bang for your buck is the way to go, but I will vote on a game that is only SP if it will blow the socks off of games like COD4. Like INFECTEDPB503 said, you can't have a game that has SP a 10 and MP a 0 or 5. You have to average the scores out. If the MP is included when you buy the game, you have to account for both, not just one of them. Now for example Bioshock was just SP. It deserved to be up there with COD4. In order to slap the GOTY on a game, everything on that disc has to beat out what's on the other games' disc. If MGS4 just had its FANTASTIC single player on the disc, then I would be with you guys saying it's GOTY, but they decided to through a broken MP system on with it.

They may have wanted to put MGO by itself, but in the end, when you payed $60 for the game, what did you get? You got both! Plain and simple. Which means all aspects that are on that disc have to be accounted for. Whether you like it or not. When a game is considered for GOTY, everything on that disc measured. So if MGO is on the MGS4 disc, you can bet MGO will bring down MGS4 as a game in whole.

Man that is a tough one. There really hasn't been any games that have made me say omg this year. I haven't played MGS4 yet so I can't really say. Nothing has really had me coming back after a couple of weeks saying oh yeah I love this game. Maybe Battlefield Bad Company was probably my favorite game so far this year but we all know that will end on the 28th of this month.

Well, I feel that both GTA IV and MGS4 lived up to the expectations I had. Awesome experiences from the opening acts to the end (since there is a lot of debate on this issue – I am referring to the single player only).

However, if I had to pick a GOTY right now, it would be WipEout HD. It is so much fun, and such an addicting challenge. It is the first game in a long time that I am willing to play over and over just to perfect something. It also doesn't hurt that it is gorgeous and the music is awesome.

Burnout was fun, i did not play too much of GTA IV, but i will have to go with rock band 2, simply because it is the most fun experience you will have playing it eithe ronline or offline in the tour mode, not to mention all the dlc that you get with it.

GOTY for me has got to be MGS4. Although I havent touched the MP side of the game, the SP was, for me, flawless. A great story, great mechanics and superb graphics. To say that MGO has to be good as well to consider it as a contender for GOTY is ludicrous. MGO is an entirely different entity to MGS4, it just happens to be attached to it. It isn't like COD4 where the online side of it is a part of the main game.
