Sony’s “Home” is not the answer

By now most of you have seen the screen shots of Sony’s Home. This seems to be their answer to Xbox Live’s community functionality, and it’s looking like it will finally become reality sometime late this year or early 2009.

The problem is however, nobody really cares about Home any more. Home is basically Second Life on the PS3, and if any of you have ventured over to Second Life lately you will see that it’s a shell of what it used to be in terms of popularity. The PS3’s social community doesn’t need a “Second Life” like experience. It simply needs an effective, fast XMB experience that connects its users. Sony thinks Home will do this, but it won’t. Home will certainly have some followers and a small core group that will swear by it. Overall though the risk vs reward to Sony for Home isn’t going to pay off as it stands now. Social Gaming is moving away from the “sim” like experience and is shifting into a more creative and dynamic experience.

There is a saving grace though.  If Sony is totally hell bent on creating some type of community enviornment with avatars then “Little Big Planets” Sack Boy can be their savior. I haven’t always been the biggest fan of Sack Boy. OK, quite frankly I don’t really care for LBP so my bias stems from there. That said, I do see the brilliance of the game and more importantly the icon that is emerging from it. Sack Boy should become Sony’s Mario. He represents not only a fun and cute avatar that almost all can enjoy, but he also represents the very creative and dynamic experience that social gaming is moving towards. Sack Boy’s popularity seems to have no ceiling at the moment. Given the crazy success he seems imminently to have, he feels like a shoe-in for the job of Sony mascot. Sony needs to embrace Sack Boy, and covet him like he is the second coming of their Lord Savior.

Re-vamp Home Sony, kill off the sim like avatars and go for the jugular with Sack Boy. Sack Boy should be the avatar for everything Sony does moving forward. Give him all the customization you already have via LBP, and give him a place to thrive in a LBP like “Home” world instead of this virtual real world you are so mistakenly drumming forward with. Let this new world be populated by Sack Boys all running around and frolicking together in fun environments that can still be created with the backbone of Home’s concept of corporate sponsored enviornments.   Create a “Home” experience that people will actually want to come and enjoy.

Nobody wants to play reality Sony, but everyone wants to play with Sack Boy.

Bam! Here it goes…..Sony Home…"NOT IMPORTANT…Really.!" Xbox Dashboard…."NOT IMPORTANT"..I thought we liked to play games..maybe Im mistaken. So Ill go play my games…and maybe spend 2 to 5 min a week on the dashboard on to check my messages and see what DLC is right for me, anything else is a waste of time.

i own a ps3, and i don't care about home. never did. all i want is better in-game functionality as far as inviting friends to games, a user rating system and some type of penalty for the users who quit games early, and there are a-plenty on psn. the rest of you can shove home up your collective asses.

  • ChrisWanker

Sigh… Sony Sheep… You can't even see the trees in the forest!

    1. People want to play games with their PS3 (or watch BluRays…) not prance around in a virtual environment for hours on end. I'll be surprised if the average gamer spends more than 1/100th of their time in Home! When you look at it that way, it's not a rather wise use of resources to spend so much time and money on Home. BUT… Sony must think it will work.

Oh and don't forget, Japan doesn't have Second Life! So it's new to them. But not to us here in America, which is where it needs to be the most successful. Yeah… I'm pessimistic.

  • ChrisWanker

    2. *RUMOR* Supposedly, Microsoft came up with this whole avatar thingy before Nintendo did with the Miis. And simply they put it off on the back burner because they didn't think it would be so popular. Or at least until they saw the success of the Miis. *RUMOR*

(Personally, I think the MSavatars before the Miis rumor is BS!!!) Your call!

    3. The Golden Goose is down in sales for the 5 week in a row! A.K.A. Last place in sales!!! Games are the most important answer to the PS3's success. Sure LittleNichePlanet is great… Sure the PS3 has some great exclusives… But greedy little gamers want more! And nothing matter to them, not even Home, than more games!!!

  • RUKiddingMeFanboys

Look first let me put it out there that I own both a PS3 and an Xbox360. I have plenty of friends on both and the truth is if I have to choose with one to play online with my friends it the 360. Even with a free online network, the PS3 still can't compete and he's right about Home not being the answer. Sure it's something new (atleast if you've never seen 2nd Life before) but to those of us who aren't fanboys it looks like…. well it looks like trash! Sony needs to just clean up the XMB better so that's it's easier to invite friends in games and keep a party. The real hype behind the 360 dashboard isn't the avatars but the new features. Netflix and Party system for the win. Sony needs to get there act together instead of putting window dressings on their network and pullin the blinds over fanboy eyes!

    Ignorance is Bliss.

    1. As for this being a work of journalism… You read it, didn't you? Nuf said on that topic.

    2. Home may be exciting and new, but how long do you think the average gamer will spend prancing around in it? I'm putting my guess at about 1/100th of the actual time their PS3 is on, and I'm probably being lenient. And is it going to be a system seller? Hmmm… let's think about that one! Uh, let's not.

    3. Only Sony Sheep still dig at the RROD. It's all they REALLY have to fuss about. Seriously, think about that one! And while it is A major sore for MS, it's too bad that the RRODs are getting less and less… for Sony Sheep, that is!

With out RROD… What would you guys have to fuss about… Hmmm… not much… not much at all…? Or maybe… Live? Superior, yet costly? However, millions of people don't bat an eye at paying for World of Warcraft, and that's just one game! Oh, and I hate WoW!

  • ChrisWanker

Oh, and… well… maybe… MAYBE no BluRay. Personally, don't care about it though. Let's skip games and go straight to what counts for BluRay, movies; my upscaling DVD player on my 32" 720p Old School flatscreen seems good enough for me. And yes, I have seen HD quality video on it… remotely nicer, but for now… whooptie f-n doo! Seriously! For NOW!

    4. MS' tactic of stealing exclusives does more damage that you think, obviously. And stating it's their lack of creativity is moronic. Why do you think there are 3rd parties? DUH! Even the PS3 must rely on 3rd party support! "Oh, but wait PS3's 3rd party support is not due to lack of creativity…." Uhh… Stop before you start.

    5. Cayal's statement? He can't even see a single tree in the forest! Can you?

    1) Anybody that hasn't beta tested HOME and is voicing their "opinion" on the matter should use a little intelligence and refrain from speaking for the general populace.

    2) JOURNALISM 101 – SELL YOUR STORY ANY WAY YOU CAN. It's quite obvious that the Greg did just that here. Great job Greg…although…well I think everybody above has said quite enough on that.

    3) Xbox Fanboys screaming HOME won't be used. If you haven't beta tested and if you don't own a PS3…why should we care what you have to say? I think it's obvious if you haven't bought a PS3, you're not necessarily dying to get HOME on your console now are you? Do you actually go to the Playstation forums and see how many gamers are clamoring to get into the freaking beta??? I'm in the beta and people inside are overly excited about it. The HOME beta forums are freaking nuts with guys voicing their true feelings and RARELY…RARELY…do I ever see a post in there with somebody saying they don't "care" about HOME.

    4) FINALLY…the PS3 GAMERS have come to PlatformNation! I'm so happy to see so many passionate PS3 gamers out there. I've dealt with a lot of anti-PS3 sentiment here for about a year. Don't let anybody take your passion for gaming away. All that neutral crap…"I like games not consoles…" don't buy that BS. These statements come from people who are looking down their noises at you. They think they're above the average gamer and I'm so happy to see you all here in force knocking them off their pedestal.

    5) Any argument about sales number is insipid when concerning the 360 vs. PS3. I think Thrillhouse bought half of those 21 million anyway. Class action lawsuits against the RROD in California tell you that the Xbox 360 sales are probably greatly inflated by repeat buyers who are pissed off and not going to take it anymore. A price drop helps only temporarily. If you know something is going to break and you buy it, how intelligent is that? The mere fact that the PS3 is within 10 million consoles of the double dipping, RROD Xbox 360 is freaking amazing…especially considering the obvious price gulf.

Right now Microsoft is stealing exclusives, dropping prices, and copying other people's ideas to combat the PS3 and Sony's HOME. CAYAL hit it right on the head…Microsoft has nothing original left to offer. They know they're screwed. Like I said from day one…the PS3 is the best console and the most innovative. HOME is the perfect example of that. All you Xbox fanboys might not care….but know that MICROSOFT does…otherwise you wouldn't be playing dolls with your avatars on the dashboard this Fall.

Der…der…der! Nope, it's not a problem that is on the console that it is on. None-what-so-ever! It's actually quite funny… and sad at the same time!

But jealousy…? I've gotta say, it's awfully funny that you Sony Sheep always resort to something like that. Man, I swea!!!

Oh, and for the record, many of us DO NOT care that you've lost you're prized flagship "MGS4" to MS. And I bet many Xbots don't care either!!!

Oh, and I'm going to hit a new low here… Pharmboy / Fanboy + Sony Sheep = A farm boy doing something to those poor little Sheep… Sigh… I know… I'm just that good!

I think at this point "Everyone" is ignorant about home. Can anyone "Actually" tell me what it is? I think for most people it has become so cloudy and jumbled that even if its the greatest thing since slice bread, no one knows. I cant diss Home because I don't know what it will finally be. One moment this feature is here the next it might not be, I think what Sony is doing aside from Home is great. A streamlined experience that gets us to our entertainment and games is what we want. I think Sony knows this but at this point so much is invested into Home that they cant just dismiss it. It will be interesting to see what they do with Home.

Chris…since you're new to me, I'll pretend like you're not entirely incompetent. Your replies are frankly…antiquated and there's so many fallacies of logic, I not going to bother.

Have you actually had hands on experience with HOME? Have you talked to the people who are playing in the Beta now? Here's the crucial one…do you even own a PS3? So how can you tell me what I know is wrong when I've experienced it…but you know squat????

I've been through a war of worlds with Gui J about the 360 and PS3. I've owned both and experienced the best both have to offer. If you can't say the same, then yes…you are ignorant to one side of the issue.

    You want facts:

Xbox 360 has been out for 3 years (launch date 11/4/05) and sold over 21(21.44) million consoles according to VG Chartz. That's tantamount to 597,222 consoles sold per month.

The PS3 has been out for 2 years (launch date 11/11/06) and sold over 15(15.90) million consoles according to VG Chartz.. That's tantamount to 662,500 consoles sold per month.

NUMBERS don't lie but I could have miscalculated. I'm sure you'll turn to into a spinning machine like the McCain campaign and try to refute facts. The FACT is…you are ignorant of PS3 and HOME, thus nobody can really depend or even adhere to your 360 propaganda.

I've played WoW, the 360, and the PS3. I've seen the merit in all of the gaming avenues. When you can do the same and base your opinions on something other than hearsay, maybe then you'll find a way to get your head out of your ass.

I've been through a war of words with Gui J about the 360 and PS3.

"Chris…since you're new to me, I'll pretend like you're not entirely incompetent."

    Fair enough… But I don't think I'll return the favor….

My responses being "antiquated " and "full of fallacies?" Uhhh…huh…. How is it misleading to state that (IMO) gamers will spend about 1/100th of the time in Home when their PS3 is on. This is a simple statement of opinionated prediction, not propaganda nor hearsay.

As for "antiquated," er… uh… I'm lost. We are talking about the PS3, right? Not the PS or PS2, right? Or are you referring to my reference about my "Old School flatscreen." Personally, I'd avoid the Thesaurus if you're not certain about the usage. Though, I am intrigued as to which base word you were trying to use.
