As the new season of a sport begins, you can rely that developers will have your favorite franchises out in full force. Thus, Sony brings you “NBA 09: The Inside” for the PSP ($29.99 MSRP), bringing you 5-on-5 action in this arcade type basketball game.
“NBA 09: The Inside” brings you the joys of fast-paced basketball as well as some nice add-ons in game that come in the form of mini-games. The mini-games are very fun and give the title a nice extra feature. These games range from pinball tables full of sounds in addition to the carnival-style games, including a favorite past time you would find at an arcade or Dave and Busters, the netted basketball game with the moving backboard.
The presentation of the game while playing season or exhibition is done well, and as I said before, the action comes fast and is enjoyable. The graphics are good for the PSP, all player models and the environments all hold up well. The controls of the game are quite solid, but I wish the same could be said about the AI. I found myself many times being frustrated at my teammates for not staying on point with the plays I would call and they seemed to have a mind of their own. For someone who is advanced in playing basketball games on consoles and handhelds, this flaw could be overlooked some as your skill would out weight this. If you are someone who is competitive but is not too good at basketball games, the AI could be a killer, sending you back to playing only the mini-games.
For the price of $29.99, I would say this is fair for this game and it is worth picking up if you are a heavy PSP player, or do a lot of day to day traveling. The mini-games make it feel like two games in one, and this is always a good selling point.
