PN Question of the Week, Nov 9

Last week, Platform Nation asked everyone what feature that they were most looking forward to out of the Nov 18 NXE (New Xbox Experience) update, well, it was a little close but Netflix turned out to be the feature that our community seems to want the most. The second most wanted feature was the ability to install the games to your hard drive, something that will not only improve your video game loading time but something that will make your Xbox 360 that much quieter.

Well it is Sunday now and we all know what that means, it’s time for a new question here at Platform Nation. This weeks question is, Do you think/feel that Gears of War 2 lived up to its hype? Gears of War 2 has been touted as possibly the game of the year and I’m curious, now that you guys have it, did it live up to that? Tell us what you think.

  • I think it GOW2 is one of the best multiplayer experiences out there, just tons of fun and that is all that matters.

It definitely did. IMO Epic took all the criticisms of Gears 1 and improved upon it. The biggest change is the bigger environments. They took the criticism of small spaces and then went above and beyond to improve that.

Then of course the story has been vastly improved. The new Maria plotline was brilliant and added emotion to the story when it was badly needed. You had little-to-no emotional ties with the characters in Gears 1.

While keeping close to the core mechanics of the game, they have added new elements to keep the game fresh like the new execution moves and new enemies.

There's so much more to say but I'll keep it short and sweet!

Yes it definitely lived upto the hype!

  • I think Gears 2 is an awesome game, but game of the year? I'm not so sure about that one. I haven't played online yet so I guess that will be the determining factor for me, from what I hear Horde mode is awesome. I just had to finish the game before I'd play online.

What pisses me off about all this is all the games they released in this short amount of time. It doesn't really give you much time to play any of them enough before the next game comes out.

  • Ive only played Horde but so far its is looking very awesome..

  • Less than 2 weeks ago I was saying Fable 2 was my game of the year, now it's Gears of War 2. The story mode is thrilling and has sent shivers down my spine at times. As for online, there's a few weak game modes but on the whole it's great fun, especially with the new party system. Horde mode has to be the highlight.

I feel Gears of War 2 didn't have as much hype as I expected in the run up to its release though it is a fantastic game which will stand out for weeks, months and maybe even years to come.

  • I feel you on that, there are just too many games right now

  • The saturation of games is ridiculous this year. It's hard to tell if it's going to be "game of the year." I do believe that it is a fantastic game, although, there are a few good gripes with the title. All of which pertain to the game play(ie: the shotgun). Of course, there are always going to be the hardcore Gears 1 player who will think they totally screwed up Gears 2, but for the most part most will still enjoy all the great things it has to offer. I will always say this, but, "Hype will ALWAYS equal disappointment. No matter how small it truly is."

  • I finally got my copy today (wife released my birthday present early) and all I can say is WOW, I love this game, to date I feel it has lived up to the hype and could possibly take game of the year, but I also have not given Fallout 3 a go yet(will start that when I finish the story for Gears) but until then Gears is my pick for game of the year.

  • I had the chance to play some Horde mode today. It's fun, but the exclusion of 4 player split screen is a huge mistake.

  • Gears of War 2 was not the hype machine that dominated the web like its predacessor. I was no longer wowed by the Unreal Engine and the much over saturated stop and pop formula. It is still very much the Gears that feels bigger and more badass that we heard more time than I care to remember.

I have only played a few chapters of the single player and havn't reached anything that makes it Game of the Year thus far. I played the Versus modes and started to remember why I had so much fun with Gears online. The Horde mode was a blast but after 20 waves it started to feel kinda repetative.

Overall my experience was pretty good, but I can't really say its the best game of the year. It lived up to the hype if that means that it didn't completely dissapoint. Im renting it, and will send it back once I notice everone on my friends list has moved on.
