In the first part of an interview with Develop, Peter Edward, Game Director for Home, admitted that, perhaps, Sony unveiled Home too early and that may have lead to drop in excitement by the development community.
It’s gone through waves. Initially, there was real excitement from people, because we were showing something really different and that had a lot of potential. And then there’s the realisation that, well, we probably announced it too early – GDC 07 was a long time ago.
Let me go ahead and confirm that it is not a matter of “probably” announcing Home too early but without question this whole thing should have been kept under wraps until this past year’s Game Developer’s Conference. Sony, at the time, was in a bad situation with a console that, even more so at the time, was overly expensive compared to it’s competitors and was grasping for games and ideas to showcase. While Home may have seemed like a good idea to some, it took forever to come out and, even after all that time, had nothing compelling to do once you installed it. Instead of waiting for elements, such as the recently released Red Bull Air Race and just announced EA Sports Complex, that would compel people to actually live in Home, it has become another point used to mock Sony and their list of miscues this generation.
Do you think Home was announced too early or, perhaps, should not have been announced at all?
