Killzone 2, Is It Worth The Hype?

As most of you know, Killzone 2 will be coming out later this month. It’s suppose to be one of Sony’s biggest and most anticipated games and the hype for it is soaring, especially after the demo was just released last week. Now I might be alone of this but I’m curious if it merits all the hype it is getting. After seeing it last year at E3 and playing the demo I have to say that I’m unimpressed. I just don’t see how it will push consoles or even be the game that Sony needs right now. From what I experienced it seemed like a mediocre to decent first person shooter, not even up to Call of Duty 4, a game that was released almost a year and a half ago. I didn’t see the graphics that we were promised nor anything levels above what we have has been experiencing already. I felt that the controls were awful, not Resident Evil 5 awful but bad enough to damage the playing experience. And while we didn’t get to experience any online multiplayer I just don’t see it saving the game, Killzone 2 just seemed too slow at times.

Now before you really start to bash me, yes I know the demo is based off of an old version of the game. Yes I know that it is just a demo. Still though, I feel that Killzone 2 will end up being a perfect sequel to the original Killzone which most of you might remember was suppose to be a “Halo Killer” but did not even cause Halo to flinch. I’m expecting Killzone 2 to be nothing more then an overhyped, underperforming game that will cause much disappointment from everyone that purchases it.

So tell me, am I wrong? Or do you think it is worth the hype? I don’t know about you guys but I’m not going to be picking this game on day one because I just don’t have that much faith into the game, I do hope though that I’m proven wrong.

  • I was really excited for killzone 2. I even paid $150 USD to get it early off ebay. Once I had it in my PS3 today, I was let down. The controls are just awful, I think something is wrong with my game until I went online and saw it was part of the game. Horrible controls don’t react in time. Like moving slowly. Sorry for my english, but controls in killzone 2 were a disappointment.

  • Ha you will be burned by teh SONY DEFENSE FORCE for throwing reality in their sony puppy love eyes. These few people ruining n4g will definately come here and post $hit about u for giving a negative review for the savior of ps3.

Not a day one buy for me. I am going to maybe rent this one but I don’t feel this has given me enough for my $60. I don’t feel this is PlayStations silver bullet just yet.

    1) People just keep looking for reasons to hate the game.

    2) Control lag…whatever.

    3) I’m buying it Day one. The demo impressed me and I’ve heard long audio reviews from several sources with detailed information about the scripting, the AI, and the overall ambiance of the game being on point.

    4) Using the Sixxaxis to snipe is what sets this game apart for me.

I’m not sure what more you’ll looking for Scott. You have single player and one of the deepest multiplayer modes ever releashed for online? Did you buy Halo 3 or GoW 2 on the first date? I was horribly disappointed in Halo 3. GoW 2 wasn’t much better than the first game. Not trying to start a flame war here but saying it hasn’t given you enough for $60 is weird. Did you play the game already? Did you read articles about why they didn’t include co-op from the start?

I guess the same thing will happen with this game. Xbots won’t buy it. PS3 fans will. Everybody else will play follow the leader soon.

  • Lit, this is me that wrote that post, you know I’m not an Xbot. I wrote this as a serious post because I’m not sold on the game and I just don’t understand why others are. I’ve seen nothing that makes this game a day 1 buy for me.

  • I was really impressed with the graphics (especially the animation and lighting), and after my second time through the demo, the controls totally worked for me.

BUT, the biggest reason that I am excited is because of the reviews. I know that lots of critics can’t be trusted. But, in general, Sony sucks at massaging out good review scores from critics (Uncharted is less than 90 on Metacritic!), and 92 (the current Metascore) is nothing to sneeze at.

If you think that reviews can’t be trusted, can you point out a single game (in a genre that you like) that is over 90 on Metacritc but is not really good? I can’t.

  • TheL1T1G4T0R

Okay. I hear your point but I don’t understand it.

    1) What is it lacking that makes you feel that way?

    2) Have you actually listened to any of the podcasts detailing the single player (without spoiling the story.)

    3) If you played the Demo, what makes the game not a purchase for you? What made Halo 1 or Gears of War 1 a first day buy for you? Did you need a game to have huge hype before buying it?

I hope lots of things get addressed soon on our podcasts here like this issue. The reason why I care that you’re not picking it up day one is because of sales. Every sale counts towards the bigger picture which is a competitive video game market.

I’m not worried about you not purchasing the game. You’ll be one of those who buys it later. When…I don’t know but you’ll buy it. I’m addressing the the true reason for fanboyism and that is SURVIVAL.

For each good PS3 game that PS3 gamers and Xbots fail to buy or disparage, you only make it easier for Microsoft to monopolize gaming the HD Next Generation War. You only make the red ringing Xbox 360 more appealing to third party publishers to develop their product on the 360 and port a crappy version to the PS3. In short, consumers are engendering a “cap” on the quality of future products.

I’m sick of all the anti-PS3 sentiment. I’m sick of all the pro Xbox 360 crap. All I want is a wide variety of gaming and it seems consumers are too concerned with their own individual opinions to think about the big picture.

All this anti-Killzone / PS3 / Sony crap is here because the system and Killzone 2 is the REAL DEAL. If it wasn’t, we would not be having this discussion now. I respect everyone’s opinions but gamers passing up on titles like Heavenly Sword affect ME in the end. If you don’t like it…that’s fine. But be clear. Tell us what you hate. Give us the positive criticism. I know you’re no shy when it comes to giving your opinion so what’s the real story here?

Then again…maybe you’re using this as a ploy to get a free copy.

  • TheL1T1G4T0R

Hey Mr. Maher. I just want to commend you. You are absolutely on point with everything you just said especially concerning review scores…heck…reviews in general. I haven’t heard a single bad review yet.

The mere fact that I saw a trailer over two years ago that blew my mind and now I have a demo that’s better than what I saw then is reason enough for me to support Sony and Guerilla with a purchase.

For me, this is the third PS3 game that didn’t need to ride on hype because the game is just that dang good. Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet would be the others. Those two games blew my expectations away and firmly give me reason to believe that Sony is all about the quality in this generation.

The lighting, the unique sniping function, the actual clan support, the depth of online gaming, the storyline, and the beauty of this game should serve as more buttress to those considering a purchase.

  • Steven Artlip

You’re reading way more out of what I typed then what is actually there. I just don’t see why I should pick it up. Lately I play my PS3 way more then any other console but that shouldn’t mean I have to buy this game. I’ve talked to several other PN hosts about this too and I haven’t had a single one tell me what about killzone merits a day one buy.

I don’t buy my games to save a system from failing, I buy my games based off of merit and gameplay, so once again I ask, is killzone really with a day one buy? And if so, why?

  • Steven Artlip

And how you ask or even mention this as being a ploy to get a free copy is beyond me, but I take that as a sign of disrespect

  • snakeman555

I think Killzone 2 is only a day one buy if you want to play it on day one. It is really not going to hurt sony if you buy it on day 1, or day 50 it isn’t going to hurt sony any. I am going to pick it up in the first couple of days, because this is basicaly the first BIG fps for the PS3, and I want to see what the PS3 can do, and the game appeals to me. If Steve doesn’t want to buy it day one, so what, I’m sure millions of other people will.

  • Pretty much every game in a genre I like that looks interesting, and scores over 90 is a day 1 purchase (or at least rent) for me. I like FPS games, and this looks to be a AAA title.

For me, the graphics are amazing and the game play feels great.

That is why, for me personally, this is a day 1 game (including taking the day off work so I can finish the single player!).

HOWEVER, if the graphic style didn’t do it for you, and (more importantly) the game play feels off, it is totally legitimate to decide that it isn’t something you need to play right away.

I know that pretty much every hardcore PS3 owner will get around to playing it eventually, and if the game does turn out to be as good in multi-player as the reviews are claiming, we can all look forward to capping Steve’s ass in future P*N gaming nights.

  • So somebody can say that “you are gay” on a podcast and that’s not offensive. I make a joke about you using this as a ploy to get a free game and you get angry?

That’s strange to me. One actually is completely false and one is based on truth. You do get free games don’t you? I don’t care that you do. You’ve earned those freebies because of the hard work you put in with the building this community, creating contacts within the gaming world, and even with your continued service for country. I’ve never uttered an ill word about you and always speak highly of you in every of community I frequent. I do call you Rich Franklin a bit much.

My whole point is you say you don’t want to buy it on day one but the only reason you gave was because you weren’t sold on it yet you didn’t say why you were not sold. You gave controls and graphics as your only reasons. I guess I should not have you to embellish.

  • I swear that last paragraph was supposed to be in English. It’s late here. I just wanted to know to a greater extent what you didn’t like about the game. Like what about the controls were awful and why the graphics mattered so much to you?
