March certainly does come in like lion with a big week of releases that features the biggest brand in video games and a pair of baseball games.
The Halo brand is getting its first extension beyond shooters with the console RTS Halo Wars (Xbox 360). Hoping to hook fans of the franchise, the games’ controls are made to be simple and allow for easier gameplay on a controller which, unlike a mouse and keyboard, is not blessed with a ton of buttons to use. The demo was solid, if not simple and should do well in attracting the Halo crowd that has never played an RTS. On the other hand, veterans of the genre may find the game to be too rudimentary.
Despite the snow falling here in the Northeast, Spring is just around the corner and that means one thing: Nice weather. I also here it means that baseball, the sport that holds the distinction of being the most boring and having the worst video games of the four major sports, is back. The PS3-exclusive MLB 09 The Show (PS3, PS2, PSP) and MLB 2K9 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, DS) , which can be found on every platform imaginable, are back with their takes on the National Pastime. While I believe the peak of baseball games is well behind us, demos are available for both and should be tried before ponying up for either.
Other notable releases this week:
Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii)
Watchmen: The End is Nigh (XBLA, PSN)
Peggle Dual Shot (DS)
Phantasy Star Portable (PSP)
Empire Total War (PC)
