New Releases 3/9/2009: More Gore

This week, amongst another solid slate of games, we get a double dose of games that feature chainsaws, decapitations and blood splattering on the screen. The best part is that even the Wii gets some gory loving.

The Resident Evil franchise makes its debut on the current generation of consoles with Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360, PS3). While now having some very formidable competition in the genre, namely EA’s Dead Space, Capcom has changed some things in the long-running series. The introduction of online co-op gameplay, something that makes everything better, adds a lot of fun but does take away from some of the horror elements. While the game does not have some of the refinements seen in newer games, like ditching the HUD and being able to move and shoot, fans of the series should enjoy the game quite a bit.

Hardcore, third party titles have not done great on the Wii despite the large install base. Platinum Games looks to change that with Madworld. With its highly stylized look, the game features some of the most brutal violence on any console. In the midst of a gladiator-style game in which contestants battle to the death, players will have to get the job done with the most style possible. Hardcore gamers waiting for something more their style on the Wii, this may be the one for them.

Other notable releases this week:

Trivial Pursuit (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PC)
New Play Control: Mario Power Tennis (Wii)
New Play Control: Pikmin (Wii)
ZUBO (DS)
Peggle (XBLA)
