Ubisoft officially announced today that current gen console owners won’t have much longer to wait before they can get their hands on Assassin’s Creed 2. Ubisoft says they are planning for a Holiday 2009 launch for the hotly anticipated sequel to their successful Assassin’s Creed title, which was launched in 2007.

Making a temporal and geographic jump from the Crusade period Middle-East to Renaissance period Italy, Assassin’s Creed 2 will cast players as Ezio, a young well-to-do Italian nobleman. After his betrayal at the hands of rival ruling families, Ezio seeks retribution in a new variety of missions throughout which players will encounter elements that are familiar favorites as well so some new gameplay additions.

“Our creative team is working hard to top the experience of Assassin’s Creed,” says Patrice Desilets, creative director at Ubisoft. “We’ve made improvements to every aspect of the game. And we’ve plunged ourselves into the stunning history of the Italian Renaissance so that we can offer fans a unique, varied and innovative Assassin’s Creed experience.”
