According to BigChampagne, a company that tracks P2P downloads, the Sims 3 has been pirated over 180,00 between May 18th (when it was first leaked) and May 21st. Buying the full version gives users access to The Sims Store and Sims 3 Exchange, sections of the game that cant be accessed on a pirated copy – features EA hopes will help get more users to purchase the game.
“The pirated version is a buggy, pre-final build of the game,” Holly Rockwood, a company spokeswoman, said in an e- mailed statement. “It’s not the full game. Half the world — an entire city — is missing from the pirated copy.”
When asked what would EA do when the full version came out and everyone just pirated that, Holly said “Uhh…..”.
All jokes aside, I dont see this as a major impact to the Sims 3 sales. For one i think this number is way off, i dont know how BigChampagne tracks private torrent sites of sites like Rapidshare so i would say that estimate has to be off by at least an additional 100,000 copies. Even then it dosent account for the follwoing 10 days between the 21st and now. But Sims 2 sold over 12 million copies and as a series the Sims has sold over 100 million copies, even 1 million pirated copies would still leave bundles of money for EA.
