Arkedo Series- 01 JUMP!

OK, kids- time to leave the room. JUMP! is for the old-schooler’s.

Arkedo Series- 01 JUMP! is a recent release for the indie games section of Xbox Live, and it’s quickly climbing up the top-rated section through user votes.

And it’s easy to see why.

JUMP! is very clearly geared towards fans of old-school platforming. If you’ve been walking to the beat of Braid, Bionic Commando Rearmed, and more recently, Splosion Man, JUMP! is waiting for you.

The game itself is easy to sum up- JUMP! is very close in spirit to the original Mario Brothers title (sans Super) in terms of game play. You jump from platform to platform, dodging enemies, and extinguishing bombs before they detonate. The presentation of the 2-D format heavily borrows from Paper Mario in an endearing way, with a smooth pastel-like aesthetic that will remind you of Vanillaware’s efforts (Odin Sphere).

JUMP! takes all of these elements, and makes them it’s own. It has a great sense of humor, and is loaded with gaming and nerd-culture references (Snake, Snaaaaaaake!). It must be said though, that the game will separate the men from the boys. The difficulty bar is set really high on this one, and there’s no saving, and no continues. If you’re gonna play it, you’re gonna play it straight through. In this regard, I must say that JUMP! is one of the purest throwback titles out there right now. The fun is in how difficult and unforgiving it can be.

For 200 MSP, you can’t go wrong with JUMP! If you’re a fan of all things old-school in games, and enjoy a challenge, drop some coin and get ready for one of the best indie game titles yet.
