PlayStation 3 To Get Netflix

ps3 netflix

The PlayStation Blog has released information about the PS3’s newest feature.  That’s right Netflix is finally coming to the PS3.  Sony has partnered with Netflix that will bring us thousands of movies and TV shows directly through the XMB.

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

So by now your saying what’s the big deal I already watch Netflix through my 360.  Well let me just say you do not have a subscription fee for the PlayStation Network, unlike the 360, if you want to get Netflix through your 360 you must be a Gold Member.  So essentially your Netflix subscription will be $8.99 for unlimited  movies and TV shows streamed to your PS3, plus that will include unlimited DVD’s shipped to your home.  Not a bad deal at all if you ask me, and if you are not a multi-console house and the PS3 is your only console you are in luck.  Make sure you click on the Netflix subscription link above to stay informed when Netflix will be available for the PlayStation 3.

Is Netflix only for a certain region, or for all?
Some of the features on the 360 are not available for Canada also.

I was just about to write about this 😛 Anyway I hope this is available in Europe, if it is I’ll definately be subscribing.

  • ZED, it looks like it is US only at this point and from what I have read the CRTC won’t allow Netflix to offer service to Canada. Jake I will keep my fingers crossed for the U.K.

We don’t even have the proper video store yet like yo guys do D: Although I hear we’re getting it next month so fingers crossed that this comes with it.

Even though I don’t have a Netflix account many, many other Canadians do, so it would be nice to have that feature. Even some content on the 360 is only available in the US. Is it really that hard to make features like this available to all?

It’s weird that you have to get a special blu-ray disk from netflix to use this.

  • This was great news that day after I picked up another ps3 for the bed room to utilize the media capabilities.

  • I’d like to know how Netflix was able to simple tear up the contract with Microsoft for Netflix exclusivity. Unless Microsoft asked Netflix to pay an ‘early termination fee’. If not, then what is stopping other companies from simply throwing out agreements and doing whatever they want whenever they want? Sounds like Sony through a ton of money at Netflix, in my opinion. I’m trying hard not to sound like a 360 fanboy, but this isn’t about whether I like one console over another; it’s about how Netflix ‘got around’ the exclusivity agreement that they signed with Microsoft. Any answers?

    • @patrick netflix said from the start that they don’t plan on stopping with the 360, that they wanted to bring it to every console and every device. MS probably paid them a good chunk of change to bring it to them first, nothing more.

  • @Steve. Understandable, given the $$$ the Microsoft paid to Rockstar to keep the Episodes of Liberty City exclusive to XBL. I don’t have a problem with Netflix being available to everyone. I just didn’t know the circumstances of the exclusivity that Microsoft had with Netflix. I scoured the internet to find answers, but couldn’t, so I posed the question. Thanks for the clarification.
