Famitsu’s Review Of Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII will be released in Japan December 17th, and Famitsu has given it a 39/40. It might seem like a good rating to you, but others are a little confused seeing as how Famitsu has been giving out 40/40’s a bit easier lately. TVG (Total Video Games) reports this critical rating on FFXIII and puts it a bit more into perspective with other games.

Famitsu is the most famous video game magazine in Japan. It has been published by Enterbrain, Inc. and Tokuma since it’s first issue in 1986. Also called Shukan Famitsu, it is delivered every Thursday, circulating at least 500,000 magazines an issue. There are a few spin-off versions of the popular magazine, each focusing on a different console.

There are only 13 games that have ever received a perfect score from Famitsu:

– The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

– Soulcalibur (1999)

– Vagrant Story (2000)

– The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003)

– Nintendogs (2005)

– Final Fantasy XII (2006) – The ONLY game in the popular series to get a perfect score.

– Super Smash Brothers Brawl (2008)

– Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)

– 428: Fusa Sareta Shibuya de (2008)

– Dragon Quest XI: Sentinels of the Start Skies (2009)

– Monster Hunter Tri (2009)

– Bayonetta (2009)

– New Super Mario Brothers Wii (2009)

Now for those of you that want to try to gain a better understanding of the ratings, here are a few of the games that received the same score (39/40) as FFXIII (there are 39 total):

– The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)

– Super Mario 64 (1996)

– Tekken 3 (1998)

– Final Fantasy X (2001)

– Resident Evil (2002)

– Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (2004)

– Kingdom Hearts II (2005)

– Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (2005)

– Grand Theft Auto IV (2008

– Call of Duty: Modern  Warfare 2 (2009)

Now though Famitsu has only given one of the Final Fantasy games a perfect score, it seems their fans disagree. When asked to rate their all time top 10 games (voting was in 2006) they included (in order of popularity) Final Fantasy X, VII, IV and III.

My personal favorite is FFX!

  • I’m amazed that Nintendogs is on that Perfect Score list!

Should be Dragon Quest IX, not XI.
