When Microsoft revealed their planned motion control camera at last year’s E3, they did not hesitate to reveal the code name. Sony was less forthright and did not reveal any possible names. We now have a possible candidate.
EA’s John Riccitiello possibly let the controller out of the bag at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference. Speaking about next year’s motion controllers he said, “In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace.”
That’s right, he said Gem. We can only assume that this is the internal name that’s being used, either at EA or Sony or both. While it’s not near as ridiculous as Wii sounded in the beginning, it does make Natal sound a little cooler.
Of course, this begs the question: what should Sony’s motion controller be called? Gem is a nice try, but I don’t think it will resonate with gamers. Plus it sounds a little girly. I would like to suggest a few alternatives that Sony can use.
- The Sony Wand
- The Sony Gesture
- The Sony Motion
- The Sony Bulb
- The Sony Menacer
I think that last one may be taken, but that’s neither here nor there. Hopefully Sony will come up with something that’s descriptive and appealing to gamers. In the meantime, what do you think of the name Gem? What would you name the controller?
