My First Week With A PS3 – View From A 360 Owner

So I made the jump, after a year of holding it off I finally decided to buy a PS3. I don’t know why. Maybe it was the exclusives. Maybe it was the Blu-ray. Either way, I am now a proud owner of a PS3 Slim 250GB. I still of course have my 360 perched underneath my towering PS3 console. And together with my 1080p HDTV, I have truly entered the age of HD. This was my first PlayStation console that I have ever owned, or even played on. So fingers crossed that it is good.

Of course I decided to get the console bundle with Uncharted 2 in it. Because from what I have seen and heard from the reviews and the game of the year awards, this was the game to play on this console. So unpacking the box I was faced with the mighty console which I placed on top of my 360. I plugged it into my TV using my 360 HDMI wire. And booted it up. Plugged in my controller and it was already connected to the Internet, pretty nifty. I then began my adventure with my new PS3 console. And it goes a little like this.

Dashboard/XMB – After using both the 360 dashboard and the PS3 XMB, I can safely say that I am a fan of the 360 dashboard. Not that the XMB is bad, but with things such going to the settings section and having to scroll and scroll whereas with 360 its much more compact, it just feels like every section of the XMB is detached. With every feature such as Home or an advanced picture viewer requiring a download. Also it seems to have too much scrolling up and down with each menu. While I understand that the 360 has this horizontally, it just seemed smoother on the 360 than the XMB. But I do like the customizable themes and backgrounds much more on the XMB.

Games – Games, games. That’s the reason why people buy these consoles right?. Well the PS3 has plenty of exclusive games and that is one of the main reasons why I bought this console. I will still play all the multiplatform games on my 360 because that still is my primary console and I love to keep adding gamerscore to my 65000 at the moment.  I decided to put in Uncharted 2 and my goodness, what an amazing game. The first thing that I had to adhere to with the PS3 controller is the fact that the front two triggers are used as the main ones and the back two are the secondary ones. This wasn’t too hard to control because I can understand why from the way that the controller is shaped. But it sure is awkward at times. I loved Uncharted 2, and I’m still playing through it as we speak. I have completed Killzone 2, and I can say that I can see why people loved that game, even though I hated the zoom button being on the right stick. I have downloaded PixelJunk Shooter and am loving it. And very soon I will be getting Heavy Rain. But on the games front I love the exclusives, and can’t wait to catch up with the back catalog (MGS4, Ratchet and Clank etc..) in the coming months.

Blu-Ray – Nothing really needs to be said about this apart from DVD < Blu-Ray. Sorry Xbox 360. District 9 looked amazing!

Online – I played Killzone 2 online for a little bit, but in all honestly, out of 32 people about 3 had mics, and they weren’t speaking the same language as me. I don’t plan to buy a mic, and I really don’t plan to play the PS3 online. Fair enough the mics are better quality, but can you honestly say you have been in a match where everybody had mics and was using them? In this case I must say that the 360 online greatly trumps the PS3. By far. It all seems so detached on the PS3.

Achievements/Trophies – Achievements are better. I feel like the score with the achievements is better. I understand the way that the PS3 trophies work with the levels. But just the general whole achievements system is better. Sorry Trophies, but I don’t care if I get you and I certainly won’t go out of my way to get you.

Other - I found out the hard way not to take the disc out during a game, beep beep beep aah!. All is well though, that mistake will never be made again. Oh, and I love the disc tray that sucks in my discs. And Home sucks.

I humbly welcome the PS3 into my console collection and hope that it keeps me entertained for many years to come.

UPDATE – After a plethora of comments I do class some of the above points of view void. But I do believe that my points of view stand. Some of the people in the comments are obviously “fanboys” of the certain consoles and only own that sole console so they can’t really see what it is like from both sides. Yes, the XMB is innovative and a useful way to navigate, but from a neutral point of view, I would still class the 360 dash to be much more user friendly.

I know that you can buy triggers, I know that some people have use for Home. But I spent enough money on the console and I really don’t want to go out of my way to spend anymore.

Many of you have pointed out that online play on Killzone 2 is amazing, and after watching videos of it on youtube, I can see where you are coming from. The clan systems and in some cases the mic systems are used plenty. But in my eyes, it will never match the fun that you can get from loading up a match in any game on 360, knowing that at least 90% of the room will have a mic in any game (seen as though it ships with the console) and ignoring all the 12 year old’s screaming. You can get some genuine matches with strangers without having to arrange any clan aspect. Oh and I realize now that I could of customized the controls. Totally forgot.

I don’t have a problem with trophies, in fact I love trophies, they are just like achievements but shiny. But i just don’t feel that sense of achievement when I receive one, and although the ranking system is a valid system, I prefer seeing my ranks in numbers.

In the end, this article is titled, My First Week, so it is my first week with the console and here I am saying what I think, over time, I will come to loath or love the different features of the PS3, but this article is here describing my first week on it. And this is what I think.

I own both, and prefer my PS3. I think you probably favor the 360′s dashboard, trophies, and games better because you’re more familiar with them.

  • JQQQ

Oh I forgot to mention Trophies. First off your gamer score is so stupid and meaningless. So when you play games all it does is make your score go higher? Thats it? At least trophies have bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. Plus we have levels. Each trophy adds to the percentage need to get to the next level which is way cooler and gold and platinums feel so good when you achieve them. Some trophies even unlock stuff on playstation home.
Trophies are way better. Achievements fail and are so boring, I even like the sound you get when you earn a trophy.

  • FYI

Haze… nothing to see here, move along. Check out the demo on the store and you’ll see what I mean. Don’t waste money/time on that game unless you are just a FPS fanatic and have to play every single one, good or bad.

  • Sean Devlin

Do not try Haze otherwise you’ll probably want to sell your PS3 immediately …

  • Shooterfan

I love shooters, so I stick with PS3. No, both controllers are fine 2 play shooters and you can play all the CoD’s with both of them. But instead of PAYING for all the bells and whistles for just one exclusive shooter with a MP that some bought twice already, I prefer PLAYING new and different shooters, and PS3 delivers: Resistance, Warhawk, Killzone 2 and now MAG. 256 players suck when they don’t know what 2 do, but so did 64. But after a week? Yesterday the beta ended with some very cool games and smooth serveractivity. MAG isn’t 4 your avarage Cod & Halo kids, that’s 4 sure.

PSN offers games like LBP & MNR, KZ’s Warzone and MAG. All the shooters are still being played a lot, enough 4 sure. And for free.

Live! offers HALO3 ODST. Ever wonder why this game is being played on Live so much? 2 reasons. A) it’s a cool and solid shooter and B) there isn’t much else 2 play.

I’ve seen MW1 and/or 2 by now, BF2 might turn out well, but my first NEW GUNS are in MAG, I love the team-focus and grand finales=)

Just a few comments having read your post

    1. To view pictures on the ps3 doesn’t require any downloads there is an optional bit of software so you can view them in frames with a fancy front end.

    2. The trophies and achievements work in the same way although worrying about a gamer score is a bit gay, especially as with the playstation you just compare the number of trophies with other gamers.

    3. The XMB works just as well a the Dashboard on the 360 if not better, given the greater amoun t of system information given to the user and more customisable features than the 360.

    That’s just my 3pence.

  • Miguel_Zorro

I’m a PS3-only owner (well, we have a Wii too, but does that count? :) – I think your review is fair. You don’t come off like a fanboy to me at all.

    On your specific points:

Dashboard/XMB: A lot of people say the 360 Dashboard is better. It does have a slimmer/cleaner look. The PS3 is more customizable and has more options, but I can see why a lot of people prefer the 360 Dashboard.

Games:I love the PS3 exclusives, and I sympathize with playing all of the multiplats on one console, if you’re into gamerscore or trophies.

    Blu-ray: Enough said

Online: Personally, I prefer free, but everyone that I’ve talked to thinks the 360 online experience is a bit better. You get what you pay for, perhaps.

Achievements/Trophies: I think once anyone who is interested in this sort of thing starts on one, they’re inclined to prefer it. People would rather have a large score/trophy count on one console vs. two smaller counts split across 2 platforms. Personally, I prefer trophies because of the platinums – you know that someone completed a game vs. just getting a few points across a bunch of games. But this one is really just a matter of taste.

Looking forward to you joining our ranks as a PS3 gamer after your 360 gets the RROD – LOL, kidding.

    • Miguel_Zorro

I forgot to comment on the games. Skip Haze. Pick up God of War Collection, and download Wipeout HD if you’re at all into racers. If you like RPGs, take a look at Valkyria Chronicles. The original Uncharted is worth a play-through, but it might look last gen after playing Uncharted 2.

  • Brad

I’m not sure how fair it is to pass judgement on the PS3 after only a paltry one week of use, versus years(?) of Xbox 360 play. I think this article would have been more accurate and useful after at least a couple of months of ownership.

just hang on a second, i’ll start by saying i am a PS3 and wii owner. thought about buying an xbox for awhile only reasons 1. exclusives and 2. other friends have it. why did’t i though? well here’s why this is where and why i say PS3 will win no matter what. i dare somebody to tell me where i can buy a 500GB hard drive for the 360 for about $100. because i did that for my PS3 and it works just fine. overall the hardware is way better and as we can tell the PS3 has software actually more exclusives or should i say great exclusives then the 360. so really what does the xbox have that we don’t well other then their very few exclusives that are good and apparently amazing online that you pay for what do you have other then that? every time i have played on a friends 360 i keep thinking oh god i hope it dosen’t get RROD or some other error. if your going to harp on the PS3′s “yellow light of death” just stop be somewhat smart for once and think as to why it’s doing that. you ever have a surge in your house and did’t have your system plugged into a surge protector yeah best to think first. But in the end i say this in the beginning the xbox had crap hardware and great software and the rule is this. If you build a product with great software and shitty hardware it’ll sell switch those roles around and it won’t. now the PS3 when it started had great hardware with potential but no good software except well resistance but thats not enough. but like i told all my friends buy a PS3 and wait and see. sure enough look where we are the PS3 has amazing hardware and now amazing software. Xbox has more hardware troubles then ever and very little software. So from my point of view which is more of a tech point of view the PS3 triumphs, as did the PS2 and one

  • sklorbit

as an owner of both consoles i would have to say i agree with about everything you said. honestly though, they are both good and cant really be compared. both have advantages and thats why some people like me have both.

  • Eire

For Killzone 2, I recommend the controller layout “Alternative 2″
It’s similar to the control scheme in Call of Duty.

  • CrimsonFox13

Just wanna say one thing, the game SOCOM has players using mics all the time. Play in a ranked room, and half of the time every single person has a mic, the other half it seems up to three people most are missing them. But that game has bad issues and the only people playing it are probably hardcore SOCOM fans that like coordinating tactics.

  • http://www.xpx-clan.com Cesar

nice article, the mic issue, you just need to find a group of friends, or clan .. randoms don’t tend to use mics

  • tmoe01

I myself just recently got the same PS3 just before Christmas. The XMB shines in its custimazation, while the 360 shines with ease of use, the only complaint i can now validate is it is kinda retarded that I have to pay $40 annually(Costco suckas!) for a 360 Gold memebership when all that stuff is free on XMB. Achievements feel more rewarding that Trophies, especially when I realize I will never get a platinum trophy for getting every trophy in the game.. Of course BD beats the s**t out DVD especially when it comes to some of the extras that you get on BD. I kinda think that the graphics are equal each have minor tweaks that are better than the other but its nothing you would notice while actually playing a game. My only major complaint with the PS3 is the goddam *#&$%#@ non compatibility with PS2 games. I’m hopin someday Sony will come to their senses and put backwards compatability in an update for download. i got sooo many good PS2 games that are just collecting dust… Aside from that i really like the catalog they have of PS1 games. This frustrates me and makes me scratch my head cause I can play my old PS1 games on PS# but not my PS2….

  • Downcastone

I have to say i got rid of my 360 a year ago when 8 out of the 10 people i work with that had one got the RROD and decided i didn’t want to deal with sending mine back or being SOL if it(when) it broke. When i first got my PS3 i hated the XMB and missed the dashboard blades. This christmas my wife got me a 350 and i absolutely hate the new dashboard and wish i had an option to just use the old blade style. People complained when PS3 added the store icon to more categories saying it was to much advertising but the new dashboard it just a mess to me with nothing but useless info and adds. The avatar thing is lame but it is cool to be able to use it as your gamer picture which i wish PS3 would let you do and yes home is pretty lame.

  • http://www.ut3mod.com LarryL

I personally much prefer the XMB to the 360 interface. It’s just so simple and smooth. I don’t understand this “disconnect” you say it has. Also, you don’t need a download to view pictures…..what kind of lie is that? That download is optional software to play around with the pictures.

And downloading the update for Home take like 2 minutes, if that,

As for your comment about mics on Killzone…….Plenty of people use mics in Killzone. But unless you are in a squad, you only hear people that are near you. It’s called proximity chat. Join a squad. Though I will say, and I gave this feedback to GG in the beta…..it really should just be open mic to your whole team if you aren’t in a squad, with proximity chat only being used for hearing people on the other team if you are near them.

Calling PS3′s online detached is just a typical 360 fanboy argument. The only features 360 has for online that PS3 doesn’t is cross game chat, which is useless and a waste of bandwidth, and a universal party system. But PS3 games typically have an in-game party system, so it’s really the same. Not worth $50 a year.

And saying Achievments are better than Trophies is just more evidence of being infected with the fanboy bug. They are the EXACT same thing. Only difference being you don’t rack up a number of gamer points, you instead rack up experience points and levels.

And how exactly does Home suck? I absolutely LOVE it. I get to customize my avatar and I can do it without spending an arm and a leg like on Live. Example…..a lightsaber on 360 is $6!!! LOL, what a rip. They rip you off for all the accessories on 360. On Home, stuff is 25 cents-$1. And I actually get to DO STUFF with my avatar. Playing games like Bowling, Pool, Texas Holdem, Buzz Trivia, and about 100 other fun games, with thousands of other people, and playing those games nabs you TONS of free clothes and accessories as well. People who bash Home are complete idiots imo. I’m on there every night, or every other night for the past year, and I never get tired of it.

I don’t know why people dislike the XMB, i like it, so easy and user friendly!

“t just seemed smoother on the 360 than the XMB.” YOU ARE MAD! The NXE and Blades for Xbox 360 sucks! Because of the delays when navigating! There’s always a mini sec pause delay when navigating!

    GAMES
PS3 has good exclusive, but what is so cool about them is when developers pushes the limit of the PS3 and you see jaw dropping engine and graphics. Unlike Multiplatform piece of trash prots of ps3.

Second the PS3 has the best controller! Play for hours and you wouldn’t get cramps unlike 360′s. The L trigger And R Trigger are badly designed but more responsive than 360′s. Buy the Trigger support.

” Achievements are better. I feel like the score with the achievements is better. And just the general whole achievements system is better. Sorry Trophies, but i don’t care if I get you and I certainly won’t go out of my way to get you.”
    You are crazy!

You are telling me: Complete Ninja Gaiden 2 weapon runs, all giving you 5g each is better than Trophies!??? you must be crazy. You want me to spend hours of my life and to gain 5g result in the end?

“Oh, and I love the disc tray that sucks in my discs. And Home sucks.”
Yes, now you are feeling the true form of Next Gen console. Its best if you actually got the FAT PS3. Because when you turn it on for the first time, you’ll be amazed. Because the console is touch screen!

And HOME doesn’t suck, you suck. You use HOME to communicate with other PS Users, you use it to chat like MSN.

Overall, PS3 is a better beastly console and a true next gen console. Xbawks 360 is a pre-next gen console, seriously, a console still using 2005 devices and techs. It still pushes disc drive outwards, not touch screen, etc

It’s good you have a ps3 now, cuz ever since I have my PS3, my 360 eats dust 3/4 days a week.

  • cell989

Trophies are way better if you are a serious gamer. YOu can really see who’s a pro vs a noob. With achievements a noob only needs to play a whole bunch of dumb ass games to gets its cheap achievement feed.

With trophies, a pro can show how good he is by looking at his level, and most importantly his number of platinums acquired. The satisfaction of knowing you aced Killzone 2 or Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 with a platinum is priceless.

Again this only applies to serious gamers wanting to show their skills, not noobs looking for cheap gamer points to rack up.

  • GamerOfTheCentury

“This was my first PlayStation console that I have ever owned, or even played on.”

    WHAT….. THE…… HELL?

That was your first mistake man. :/ Pick up a PS2 for 60 bucks at GameStop and splurge on some games. You missed out in a large way.

  • Tinayef

i think there’s no “best” system, it all depends on what you like. if you are a fan of single player games then odds are that you will prefer the ps3 because of its exclusives (examples: uncharted 2 and infamous). if you are a fan of playing games online then you will prefer the 360

  • shaggy

holy shit the fan-boys just flew out of the woodworks for this one! He clearly states that he’s a 360 owner and never owned a PS so obviously he’s going to give the 360 a better score. Man you fanboys… i wish i could meet some of you for real and smack your 12 year old head full of some common sense

  • TrueGaer

    Stupid! Oh my! Stupid comparison.

  • http://www.theuncannygamers.com/ Gemini Ace

Good article and good point of view. I was in the same boat when I bought my PS3 and feel largely the same. I do prefer the XMB over the dash. It’s way cleaner and not bogged down by XBL and all the advertising. I haven’t done much online gaming. It doesn’t bother me that no one has a headset because I don’t usually use one on XBL or PSN. I just want to shoot manz.

After one week, I can see you being right where you are. I love my PS3 for things like blu-ray, the browser, and playing movie files off of a thumb drive.

  • Alan

You can actually understand what people are saying through the mics on the PSN. My 360 mic was free and it sounds that way, too.

Don’t overlook that the better exclusive online games have excellent dedicated servers. I always get a great connection in those games without exception.

    • Mike

well, here its law that you cant talk and drive so you need to have a Bluetooth for hands free so their everywhere here. The problem with dedicated servers is that they stop after awhile. Enemy territory quake wars 360 is a good example. its not servers but the stats are tracked by a server. now, the server isn’t supported anymore so half the achievements in that game are useless… games like MAG with 256 players will be sweet, until you can only play single player
