It is not really a secret, I am a major fan of all things zombie. Books, movies, games…all of it. There is just something about the impending apocalypse that fascinates me. Perhaps it is the idea that my useless knowledge and skills with a shotgun may finally come in handy. In any case, I was very excited when I caught wind of Zombieland last summer, and equally disappointed when I would miss it every weekend it was out for one reason or another. That said, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the movie when it finally released.
The general plot is pretty simple, and not uncommon. A group of survivors in an apocalyptic world try and make it. What makes this movie a hit for me is the light-hearted satire and the way that they make it happen. The 4 main characters are Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). Columbus is a normal kid who led a fairly mundane life until the zombie outbreak hit. He ends up meeting up with Tallahassee and the both of them eventually meet up with Wichita and Little Rock who are sisters. The group of them end up on a trip to an amusement park on the west coast, for better or for worse.
I won’t give away anything else, actually…that is about the entire plot. It sounds a little dry, but trust me when I say that this movie will deliver some one-liners for the ages. There are not many movies that actually make me laugh out loud and this one did so, many times over. I seriously don’t think that they could have picked anyone better to play the role of Tallahassee than Woody Harrelson. This is certainly not a family movie, that should be fairly obvious. What it is however, is a movie for fans of zombie movies and comedy. I seriously don’t think you need to be a zombie genre fan to enjoy this either, it’s something anyone with a sense of humor and open mind can enjoy.
I happened to purchase the Bluray version of the movie and was pleasantly surprised that it included a digital copy as well. I love that this is becoming more common, I can now take this with me on my iPhone and enjoy it wherever I go. The other thing that I noticed and appreciated was the Zombieland PS3 theme that is included. I actually stumbled on this by accident when I was scrolling the PS3 menu with the disc in there. It’s nothing fancy, but hey…who doesn’t like extra goodies right? If you are a fan of movies like Shaun of the Dead (the standard for zombie flicks if you ask me) or games like Left 4 Dead then you have to see this movie, and probably purchase it. Overall, I give this movie a solid 4.5 out of 5 severed heads.
