My First Week With An Xbox 360- From A PS3 Owner

Xbox 360 or PS3- it’s a question that plagues everyone who has one of the two forerunners this generation. Of course, one could also argue that the Wii should also be counted there, but many ‘hardcore’ gamers think otherwise- me being one of them.

I’ve had my PlayStation 3 for just over a year, and when I bought it I thought I had done the right thing- everyone who I knew had one, and most of all, it had LittleBigPlanet- a game that I so desperately wanted to play.

It was then, however, I started to regret my decision- I later found out that virtually all of my mates had got a 360 for Christmas- I was gobsmacked. And ever since then I’ve tried to defend the PS3, and I never backed down- until last week.

Yes, the tide turned as soon as I switched it on- I was greeted with the setup page that was very easy to complete and, when that was done, I was taken to the lovely Dashboard. “Wow” I thought. I got myself signed into Xbox LIVE Gold and added some of my mates, created my avatar (o hai Nintendo!) and then I played some Forza.

My Xbox showing my awesome avatar

On My Xbox you can do all sorts- change your avatar, admire it...

It read the disc. I looked up at the sky outside to see if there was a plane flying over my house, and there wasn’t. It was the DVD drive. I have either got a faulty BenQ drive in mine (as that’s what drive I have determined that I have) or it’s normal- now, I had heard complaints before and I didn’t think that it was going to be this loud…and I thought my PS3 was a tad noisy!

Aside from this, I decided to check out the a ton of more features there are available- Last.fm, Facebook, Sky Player (though you need a multi-room subscription which I don’t have, so I can only watch on-demand programs) and of course, the Marketplace; the home of the demos, games on demand and a whole other array of things. What I like about it all is that everything has the same Dashboard theme it makes everything seem integrated properly and not an add-on, much like how the PlayStation Network feels like on the PS3.

Xbox 360 Game Add-on Marketplace

Uses the same Dashboard theme throughout- looks very sleek, doesn't it?

However, it’s not all fine and dandy for the Xbox- the one thing that annoyed me most is all the extras you have to buy- LIVE, batteries (or the Microsoft’s Plug & Play), wireless adapter (that is expensive, coming in at £30 or more; alternatively you could just but an Ethernet cable) and for me, I’m going to have to get an overpriced HDD and a headset too. Darn.

Those are just my feelings so far, and I’m sure most with both consoles feel the same way-  I hope so anyway. Comment away Platform Nation buddies!

theezey, your joking right? the most highly acclaimeed game on the (mw2-tho multiplatform,) is the glitchiest game on the 360 online. going to this site, you read all the stuff about how live is hacked constantly. the psn is rarely hacked. socom is old, and if you hadnt noticed, zipper was busy making the biggest online shooter to date. im not a fanboy. i also have purchased a 360 within a week.i enjoy it. idk why the system is so loud. but it has good games. the visuals dont compare at all to the playstation. i own both. you cant deny the visual capabilites of the ps3. the thing that made my experience flawed with the 360, is the fact that i went from uncharted 2 and killzone 2, and mag, to halo 3 and gears. kz 2 and uncharted destroy it visually, and when i tried to play mw2 on the 360 and halo 3 online, i was playing with only 14-15 other ppl. but mag in 255 other ppl. just saying, im happy i only bought a one month subscription. im paying more for less. so theezey, that doesnt make sense. “you pay for what you get” so you dont pay for anything on the ps3, but get more? nonsensical. you pay 5 bucks a month for a service that doesnt perform like the free service, and no web browser. have both, but the 360 doesnt take the cake. sorry guys. my opinion. and ppl, get both, but dont say “my system is better” til you get both—now back to fable 2

I own both, both are great, there are some good and bad things on both, Blue ray, and no cross chating, Noisy, best online for consoles, etc. The main thing is that real hardcore gamers cannot live without playing a great exclusive. I bought my 360 to play gears and halo, but now I have mass effect. Two years after that, I needed to buy my PS3 to get uncharted and LBP. So true hardcore gamers are not about consoles but games. Even PC hardcore gamers need to buy a console every generation just to try that big exclusive.

this is directed at the guy who CLAIMED GTA4 on 360 looks better than the PS3 version, stating it rund in true HD and the PS3 version doesn’t. LOLOL WRONG!!!! Go look at the GameTrailers side by side comparison. The PS3 version looks noticably better, has better lighting and FAR better particle effects on the explosions. And both version run at the same resolution. 360 just upscales. FACT. Fanboy dis-info from the usual 360 suspects. Get informed and stop being a fanboy.

  • Tom Peeper

Wow. Far too much fanboyism going on. If you are going to support one console thats fine. But do it in a way that doesnt bash the other console.

Heres my reasoning of playing Xbox over ps3.

    1. Friends- I enjoy getting online with friends, so this made this an easy choice. Nobody I know has a ps3. all my friends have 360, so this was an easy choice, in that aspect.

    2. I love shooters. 360 is a shooter console. Its others games are no good but I love shooters on 360. I even gave ps3 a chance on these and played Killzone 2. I tried to enjoy it but the ps3 controller is not made for shooters. It was driving me insane. If I could have played Killzone with a 360 controller, I would have enjoyed it. how do people playing shooters with the analogs so close together. also, the shooting in that game was mapped to R1? wtf? i shoot with a trigger, not the front shoulder button. I even had the socom beta for a while. couldnt get used to the controller though.

Basically, if the PS3 upgraded the controller and the online was more like Live (in terms of friends), then I would play it. Those are the only things holding me back. I have had a ps3 twice and sold it twice. I even bought an adapter that allowed me to play with a 360 controller. much improved. I highly suggest getting the adapter.

You don’t need a wireless adpater. I never bothered to buy one.

Just get a wireless bridge and a crossover ethernet cable. MUCH cheaper.

You don’t need a play and charge kit. Just buy a big package of normal AA batteries or some reachargable AA batteries and a charger, again, MUCH cheaper than a play n’ charge (which is two AA rechargable batteries wrapped in a plastic sheath with a USB cable with an odd connector anyway).

The HDD is a bit of a bummer. I got my 120GB for $80 when Circuit City was closing. But, you could have got an elite or one of the game bundles that comes with a 250 GB drive.

When you do get a 120GB drive you’ll be able to istall your games which usually (but not always) reduces noise and shortens load tiems considerably.

Last FM and Facebook is about as much of a waste of time as Home, or the web browser is in the PS3 unless you happen to be into that kind of stuff. I’m not.

On the PS3 your included charge cable is just a very short USB with a mini on one end. Most people buy a longer one since it is the ONLY way to charge the controller.

If your HDD is big enough consider downloading ‘Trials HD’ and ‘Shadow Complex’.

I was the opposite. I’ve always had an Xbox 360 and loved it. This past christmas I finally bought a PS3 and find myself really enjoying the exclusives it has to offer. The console itself has some nice features too that keep me on it like Home and the proper video support. I like them both equally though and have no higher opinion over one or the other to make me a “fanboy” of either. They each do different things, and of what they do differently, they are great.

  • Consoldier

Yes, you will probably soon find yourself like me. Playing 360 for games and using the PS3 for movie duties or a great door stop.

The PS3 feels cobbled together with their online network/dashboard.

XBL/360 really feel like completely connected experience. I know after using XBL for years and then going to the free PSN it was like going from steak to pretzels.

You only did yourself a disservice by not shopping around for a WiFi adapter for cheap. I’ve found some really great places online.

You probably should not of gotten the Arcade version and actually went with an Elite. Since you want to compare it to the Slim at least pick the closest model. Not the cheapest one, then fail to mention it and then cry about how it doesn’t have an HDD.

Ever wonder why 360 sales are currently better than ps3? Lets see… a ps3 owner buys one it doesn’t break for years and years. 360 owners (sorry for this fact) once warranty runs out you need to purchase a 2nd, maybe 3rd and if you’re damn unlucky and can withstand the pain buy a 4th model. After all you’re a fanboy and can tolerate RROD and hidden costs. Fanboys = fanactics.

As for the ‘sorry I bought a 360 because all my friends are on it’ reason you make me laugh! I have a group of friends and the couple who have 360s are too tight to buy a live subscription. Whereas all of us who have a PS3 can play together online straight away (spend money on games rather than xbox live)… FOR FREE! And we chat over skype in 8-player conferencing on a PC/smartphone and guess what? IT’S ALSO FREE! And the voice quality is superb.

  • Boomkid

I see a lot of Microsoft brown-nosers here. Just enjoy the games and quit whining.

  • http://www.deepmix.eu RogerN

I thought about getting a 360 too, but ended up with a PSP instead. A lot more exclusive games on that platform that I’d rather play. With component 1080i cable and a dualshock3 it’s kinda nice…

  • Matt

Im a 360 and PS3 ownder myself, and personally I love them both for what they offer in games. 360 though will never catch the ps3 with graphics seeing how they have games like Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain especially. And seeing as I had my ps3 for 3 weeks played it online and had no lag what so ever I was totally happy. Then when i switched to 360 to see whats going on with the MW2 BS there was lag immediatly! 360 is still my home console though since it was the first I actually bought and invested money in. And I will keep it just for the Halo reach coming soon which will retake the throne from Mw2 =D. IMO ps3 9.5, 360 8.5

  • HEY!

You can see PS3 trophies in game….

    fail on your part

  • Emkayu

I’ve owned both consoles for more than a year, to be honest I find that the games and the controller of the xbox are far above the quality of the PS3 titles, which has a few exclusives that are darn good. However the PS3 is miles ahead in terms of hardware, never had a problem and the built in blu ray is a God send. Yet when i baught MW2 for both consoles, i always found myself playing on the 360, the controller feels much more ergonomic. On the other hand i could never play SF4 on my xbox and always play that on PS3. To be honest I don’t see what the fanboys are doing, they’re both great consoles with their weaknsses and strengths but if you choose to have one and only one and slate the other, your missing out, if you can buy both! Another point, I’ve yet to play an FPS exclusive to the PS3 that has multiplayer as good as halo 3 and i’ve yet to play a game that looks better than UC2 and KZ2 on the xbox.

  • James Martin

I haven’t actually got the Arcade, I got a refurbished Pro. The HDD is only 20GB; not enough for me!

“You can see PS3 trophies in game….

    fail on your part”

No you can’t. On the very latest update it says you have to quit to be able to look at them normally; the only other way is by using the compare trophies method with another player which takes ages to load up.

    • MM51-TheRealDeal

      when was this video made?
you can see your trophies in game
      and your messages

you have been able to do it for years!
the only time it says you have to quit is on the really old 2006 titles like motorstorm1
it is obvious that you dont actually own a ps3

      • James Martin

What? My PS3′s PSN is Livin_in_a_box. I’ll take pictures and videos if you want.

  • will

I have all three systems. I could care less what any of you say…my 360 gets the most playing time of the three because live provides much more, and more of my friends play on live and have a 360! I do love the option to play all the exclusives on each system, bit again the crossplatform games in my opinion play better on 360.

  • ps3 3 all the way

lol man u said u cant check your trophies in game now i know u dont have a ps3, yes the fuck you can u dumb prick. know what stay on brake box 360 shit u will be paying while i will be playing for free

  • cell989

Honestly there is no better system than the PS3 at the moment, it doesnt matter what the xbox 360 does best, at the end of the day the PS3 still edges the competition.

  • mark

lol your just fanboys, how can you say you got a 360 cause online is better,if u liked online that much you would bought a ps3 since it has its own dedicated servers and its free and dont have all the abuse from little chavs on live..multi plat games on the whole look better on ps3 ie. re5,oblivion,ff13,prototype,dante infernos, dark siders,bfbc2,bio shock 2 etc etc ,its just the odd game like bayonetta that gets hyped all over the net looking worse on ps3 make peeps think that multi plat games look better on 360,its a urban myth and exclusive ps3 games blow anything away currently on the 360.
The 360 has the least amount of exclusive games aswell, another trick MS uses by saying games on the pc n 360 are some how 360 exclusives lol(if its on more then 1 system its not exclusive)

  • saminseattle (PSN:gamesnskate)

nice article :) I like that you didn’t necessarily ‘ bash ‘ either console but just made note of some good and some not-so-good features. I originally bought my PS3 almost 2 years ago (the MGS4 bundle) and haven’t regretted it since; I am forced to play away from my router and am unable to use an E-cable do to the people I live with so the PS3′s built-in wireless has been a great functionality. However, this doesn’t mean that I think the PS3 is ‘ better ‘ than the 360 or that I don’t want a 360 alongside my PS3. I love all the great games the PS3 has to offer and can’t wait to go purchase a 360 as well once I get the money so that I may delve into all the fantastic software that is has offer.

  • Matty

My younger brother has a 360 and he has had 2 one died with rod and the other was free
from amazon (sent 2 by mistake).i bought him live for christmas to stop him getting a ps3 mainly because he doesnt respect his things and now he makes stupid noises down the mic e.g farts, burps, squeeks. So yes i feel the same way wat people are saying about the age of 360 owners and i am glad i own a ps3 people are so much easier to game with. I wudnt sell my ps3 for anything i have had 2 one 60gb and one 250gb i sold the 60 because i have play tv so wanted a bigger hd

  • Skid Row Trash

Lets also not forget about how much better the Xbox 360 controller is than the PS3. Sure, the PS3′s Dual Shock controllers were cool, and top of the line… when the PSX was around (Playstation 1). Back then it was the first real awesome controller, with 2 sticks and so many buttons.

Then Microsoft tried to make a better control, and did so with their Type-S controller. The sticks are offset which is a HUGE improvement over the PS3′s parallel sticks. Microsoft has made the PS3 style obsolete, and yet PS3 still tries to use these pathetic controllers. The sticks are too close, and my thumbs always bash against each other and the sticks actually can touch. That is garbage. If the PS3 had picked up the offset analog sticks then perhaps I could stand playing even a single game on the system. Unfortunately, I can’t. What good is a game without great controls? Not good at all I say. Sure the PS3 looks nice, but so does the 360, and it has way more to it, and everyone who subscribes to Xbox Live helps to make it better with constant improvements as the money is put back into the system.

PS3 have free online. It is so crappy that if they asked someone to play they wouldn’t unless it was at least half as good as Xbox Live.

Xbox 360 is the current gen winner for sure, and the definate way to go if you know whats good for you.

The only plus on the PS3 side of things, is that it comes with a browser built in. Now THAT is cool.. other than that though, if fails in every other category when compared with the 360. Multi-platform games even run better on the 360 than the PS3.

  • skillz

Sorry guys but I have both and my PS3 is collecting dust. I can’t deal with the load times on the PS3. Xbox 360 has my vote hands down. Also with the PS3 u got to buy all the parts too such as the headset and others. Xbox 360 kills the PS3 hands down.

  • http://n4g.com Jonathan

I had both console and the ps3 and xbox 360 exclusive games that are little console sony microsoft leads but nothing more, first live xox has a huge catalog, second you pay but you pay for top quality servers, best gaming experience. my brother has a 360 and I’m a ps3 and have the same sign of the internet and play I have no lag and my brother are the game servers. The interface of the xbox to play this brutal hasco is that of
nintendo is better. In order to overcome microsoft to sony in this generation and for long. The numbers speak for itself

  • James Martin

Heck my TV is resting on the PS3 box- you can see the Sony logo and my PS3 headset’s lying there in front of the telly!

  • 360GARBAGE

Actually on PS3 you can view your trophies in game so you dont know what your talking about… YOU EPIC FAIL!!
