Games That Nobody Plays Anymore: Gears of War Double-Whammy

Sigh.

Horrible writing, an obsession with chest-high walls and enough forced depressive themes to make even My Chemical Romance scream in anti-happiness fashion.

Gentlemen and ladies, Gears of War.

Gears is one of the few franchises that I hate and want to murder while it’s asleep, but it’ll probably reflex with a forced emotional moment or lag out due to server disconnection (we’ll get to that). It’s all based around the idea that aliens from outer space (well, the planet’s core but shut up Sci-fi cliches) invading a planet and it’s all sad and heroic and we’re not going to make it and lets have ‘Mad World’ as the trailer music. Because obviously, that’s how you create a depressive utopia. Sarcasm aside, Gears tends to ignore central character development and just concentrate on its frowning animation or gravely voice acting. It feels way too forced to get into, you’re never a soldier in the fight, turning back the unfightable fight. I hate to compare to my most hated of franchises (Halo) but there’s never a sense of epic that saved Halo for all of its falling graces. Okay so you can’t exactly capture epic, but Gears does do some set pieces and environmental changes quite well, just please stop trying to make me cry or frown or get sad/mad. I’m not going to get angry just because you kill a character I didn’t care about or you wrote a line such as “We can’t make it! We’re going to die!”, or you even kick in a unnecessary horror element. It doesn’t scare or provoke any of my emotions.

Gameplay is fine, if slightly both awkward and casual. You’ll press A to Velcro yourself to a wall, peek out, wish for the music to stop swelling up with the same melodramatic melody you heard three minutes ago, and then start shooting things. There’s lots of things to shoot, but there’s also a gigantic puzzling element. By puzzling element I mean something that the developer showed off at one point and said they were ‘really excited about bringing a whole new genre into the Gears’ melting pot’, it turns out to last just one section. Oh and it involves shooting things, clever, clever Epic Games.

In fact, am I the only one who finds it ironic that Epic Games never actually make ‘epic games’, but rather linear and central with pathetic excuses for character development.

What we’re left with then is a hollowed out ball of visually depressive (but opposing to the actual story) but downright ‘illusion’ of a shooter. I never feel like I’m fluidly dashing around the battlefield, popping my clips and then chainsawing the guts out of the aliens from outer space. Three things there. Dashing in the first game involved the character hunching himself over, the camera too, and heavily breathing as he ran across the battlefield. They called it rodeo run, I called it “Marcus’ sex race”. In the second title, Marcus suddenly realizes he can move his limbs even while he is hunched over (gasp! A scientific breakthrough!) so now you can reload even while your thumb just sits on the A button probably growling at you in another universe.

Second thing. Reloading. While you’re reloading, you can take part in a comedy panel quiz show. The aim of the show is to stop your flicking thinger when it goes over the nice juicy white bits, or the bright bits for extra brownie points, otherwise your assault rifle will jam and you will be shot to death. That is unless you hide behind your mum. Yeah I went there. The whole mini-minigame comes across as a distraction, as new gamers will totally keep failing, pros will nail it and just laugh at how awesome they are and people like me will just pull a quizzical look. Reloading did not need reinventing, it did not need improving. Press square to reload. The end. Not press square to reload BUT only when it goes over the white bits. All the while you’re taking part in Epic’s little reloading experiment, the aliens are either shooting at you or the stereotypical black guy is telling you to “GET YOUR ARSE DOWN MARCUS!”

Third thing. Gore. There’s a whole lot of gore, some of it coupled with actual satisfaction and some of it just not needed. Case in point: I was defending a mansion in the first game (the Fenix estate), I took cover behind a small dresser as a galleon of aliens came up the stairs. One was just behind the dresser I was taking cover behind, standing right there with his juicy big yellow teeth. Almost in a comical fashion, I tapped the right shoulder button to fire my shotgun, Marcus popped out right there and in three seconds there was nothing left but red bits of alien. It was a nice reward for the player to see his true style rewarded in such a way. But if we go up with a lancer machine gun, the trademark weapon of the game, and hold down the B button. We can rev up a chainsaw. Pretty useless in a full frontal war with aliens with giant assault rifles. But we can chop aliens in half; in the sequel we can even have chainsaw duels with them. KEEP TAPPING B TO WIN. KEEP TAPPING B TO WIN. QUICKTIME EVENT. OUT OF NOWHERE. KEEP TAPPING B TO WIN.

Gears is not a bad game, it just has a lot of problems which keep it from being a great game. It’s a good one, I love the shooting most of the time and for all the excessive and dull “depressive” moments in the game, the characters still keep me through. What I really love about it, especially the sequel, is the level design. One minute I have to stay in the light so I don’t get eaten by night-bats, the next I’m on a speeding train trying to defeat a giant, blind alien. In Gears 2 you go from a generic urban setting to the insides of a giant worm. To say it’s disgusting would be an understatement, but there’s a level of detail found inside that just makes it all worthwhile.

Multiplayer is horrendous, especially in Gears 2, not because it’s bad; Horde is great offline or in Private matches. I just can’t get a game, maybe it’s the servers, maybe it’s my connection being too awesome or maybe it’s even ME being too awesome! I just can’t get into a public match with lag or disconnection. It had a lot of potential, but I just hop on to COD4 afterwards to make myself feel better.

If you want to sum the entire Gears franchise in 7 seconds, here you are:

“Queers of war 2″ is still played because there isn’t SHIT to play on 360… i have one, and it props up my PS3… 360 is trash

    Fixed ;)

  • http://www.gamerhusbands.com TeeTocks

Well written article with good points made to an imperfect game. The style of your writing made for a good read. Unfortunately, most of the reaction to your article will come from immature fanboys that fail at using their full brains. They consider “U R teh Suxxors” as a viable form of communication to express an opinion in arguementive form. Nice that they are so blinded by their loyalty to even bring a decent arguement to counterpoint your ctitiques.

Keep up the good writing and enjoy the realization of stupidity abounding in this fanatical demographic.

    • Nathan Hardisty

Wow. Thanks for the positive feedback, I don’t get that much often. A well written one too.

It’s too bad that probably most games can’t formulate an opinion based on facts or valid points, but instead on personal attacks or outlandish behaviour.

Anyway, thank you for giving a positive jibe to this largely negative feedback.

    • Scott Gartland

yes I agree, nice work Nath, don’t listen to what these immature kids are saying. And if they bum this game so much, then why are they so bothered about writing comments on your article, when they could be wasting their life on Gears? Keep it up

  • Facts

    Fact 1)
The game is not about aliens invading a planet. It is about humanity trying to cope and survive on a planet called Sera. Based on the games and the books, it is believed that either the Locusts were secretly genetically created by mankind or they are the original species inhabiting Sera.

    Fact 2)
The game is consistently on the Top 20 most played Xbox 360 games.

    • Nathan Hardisty

Fact 1) They look like aliens, they invade like aliens. They are aliens, we just so happened to stumble upon their planet.

Fact 2) ‘Games That Nobody Plays Anymore’ is the column title, a series of articles, not to be taken literal.

  • tonytruekilla

GEARS 4 LIFE NO QUESTIONS ASKED U PREFER 360 OVER PS3 BUT FOR SURE U DONT SUPPORT 360 U TALKIN SHIT ABOUT A GAME THAT MADE UNCHARTED EXIST WELL MAYBE NOT BUT UNCHARTED WOULD OF SUCKED IT IT WASENT FOR GEARS NOW TOO BAD THEY FUCKED UP GEARS 2 BUT ITS NUTHIN GEARS 3 WONT FIXXXXX!!!

    • Nathan Hardisty

Uncharted was in development long before Gears 1.

  • warriorpain

great artical. i know gears of war and halo are over rated for a fact. but because of fanboys and consoles of choice( mine’s is the playstation) it’s hard to look pass the reality of things. example LAIR was shit on the ps3 great graphics..great concept…shitty game…next point WARHAWK is a AAA title game. not so great graphics and that’s all for warhawk. there are lot’s of game’s on the ps3 that’s just shit and over-rated..but GEARS is over-rated and that’s a fact.

    • Warriorpain is an idiot

Good job commenting on a game you have not played idiot.
And don’t say you are not a fanboy when you are talking about your PS3 for an article about Gears of War.

  • supra5mge

Wow that is quite the rant! I felt compelled to comment since I have played and beaten both games within the past 2 weeks.

Yet the acting is pretty horrid, especially so in the 1st game, not as bad in the 2nd. Fenix wasn’t too bad.

The story is definitely lacking with huge unanswered questions. Be that as it may, I just don’t care enough to know the answers.

To sum up, I totally see your point of view, but I think that I took Gears for what it is. A action game that is fun while flawed, as most games are. People really take this crap way too seriously! The trolls that have commented are at least entertaining if not outright borderline psychotic. ” I hope the author of this article dies in his sleep” ?! really?! wow….

  • warriorpain

yeah i have played gears of war 1 and 2…it’s completely over-rated.
the question you should ask yourself is why get upset about someone’s else opinion..about a videogame at that. it’s just a game relax. it’s my opinion that it’s over-rated..hell UNREAL TORNAMENT 3 is over-rated also..darkness for the ps3 is whack..NBALIVE is over-rated there are TON’S of over-rated games in my opinion…NOW DEADRISING is hot and i’m glad it’s coming to the ps3….but the 360 can keep that HALO and GEARS BULLSHIT…OH YEAH and please get a girlfriend and have some sex’s for christ sake. thank you very much….WARRIOR OUT.

    • Warriorpain is an idiot

Who said I was getting upset? Where was that even implied from my post? Because I called you an idiot? You wrote twice as much as me buddy.
I hope you didn’t shed any tears when you replied with all that crap.

  • Wolf

“It feels way too forced to get into, you’re never a soldier in the fight, turning back the unfightable fight. ”

Um…fighting Lambent Brumaks, Activating the Lightmass Bomb, helping/saving Stranded in fight-scenes, confronting the Queen…

“just please stop trying to make me cry or frown or get sad/mad. I’m not going to get angry just because you kill a character I didn’t care about or you wrote a line such as “We can’t make it! We’re going to die!”, or you even kick in a unnecessary horror element. It doesn’t scare or provoke any of my emotions.”

Looks like it just provoked some emotions right there. Whats wrong with emotion in a game? It builds the story, the tension. If it had nothing like that, it would be a horrendously boring story.
Most people do tend to slate Tai being killed, but then he was killed a lot later than Carmine in GoW1…yet people really like him. OK, Carmine is a more likeable character, but the point still stands. Its not supposed to make you angry, just a part of the story.

“Gameplay is fine, if slightly both awkward and casual. You’ll press A to Velcro yourself to a wall, peek out, wish for the music to stop swelling up with the same melodramatic melody you heard three minutes ago, and then start shooting things.”

Its a one-button cover-shooter, its simple, easy and very effective. Find me another game like it. Its that whole taking-cover bit that makes Gears: Gears.
If you play the campaigns on Insane, you will find yourself taking cover often for fear of being annihilated. It can be an awesome feeling.

“What we’re left with then is a hollowed out ball of visually depressive (but opposing to the actual story) but downright ‘illusion’ of a shooter. ”

“Illusion”? In what way is it an illusion? Are unique weapons, gameplay, cover system and game adaptations not good enough? At least its not a generic, boring, vanilla shooter like COD.

“I never feel like I’m fluidly dashing around the battlefield, popping my clips and then chainsawing the guts out of the aliens from outer space. ”

(Ignoring that you call them “Aliens”) Ummm, thats exactly how I play. The cover-system is very fluid compared to Gears1, although the delay out of ROADIE RUN (not Rodeo…) for firing does slow the game down.
My only complaint is the awkward way of changing direction when roadie-ing without a jump – but its just a case of getting used to it.

“Reloading. While you’re reloading, you can take part in a comedy panel quiz show. The aim of the show is to stop your flicking thinger when it goes over the nice juicy white bits, or the bright bits for extra brownie points, otherwise your assault rifle will jam and you will be shot to death. The whole mini-minigame comes across as a distraction, as new gamers will totally keep failing, pros will nail it and just laugh at how awesome they are and people like me will just pull a quizzical look. Reloading did not need reinventing, it did not need improving. Press square to reload. The end. ”

Seriously, complaining about reloading? A distraction? Hardly at all. To be frank, if you are reloading, and find it a distraction at close range, then either kill them before running out of bullets or fire from further away.
The reloading system is another thing what separates Gears from other shooters: somebody in combat, losing health, can gain an active to use on a new full-health target who is coming up from behind. Not only that, but helps provide you with a better chance when going up against power-weapons. Lancers & HBs on an active are lethal.
Everybody fails reloads, even “pros”. Its an additional gameplay factor thrown in, not a mini sidegame, to spice the game up.

“There’s a whole lot of gore, some of it coupled with actual satisfaction and some of it just not needed. ”

Gore not needed? WHAT?! Ive never come across any “gore” thats not needed.

“But if we go up with a lancer machine gun, the trademark weapon of the game, and hold down the B button. KEEP TAPPING B TO WIN.”

Ummm, a “full frontal war” isnt somewhere where you should be chainsawing. The duels, again, are another gameplay element. If you dont like them, dont get into them.
Perhaps Epic should take out the chainsaw, the trademark and unique weapon to Gears, and revert back to boring and bog-standard knives like COD.
    Um.
    No.

“Gears is not a bad game, it just has a lot of problems which keep it from being a great game. It’s a good one, I love the shooting most of the time and for all the excessive and dull “depressive” moments in the game, the characters still keep me through. ”

Every game has a lot of problems, but the problems in Gears dont stop it from being a great game.

“What I really love about it, especially the sequel, is the level design. ”

Quite frankly, level design was way better in Gears1. Compare Subway, Tyro-Station, Canals, Gridlock and especially Mansion between the 2 games, and then with GoW2 maps. The dark, gritty feel of GoW1 looks and feels much better, but saying that, by adding some of the awesome rain and thunder from Mansion/Subway to say, Blood-Drive or Jacinto…then Id agree. The Dark-Corners maps for GoW2 were a much needed addition, and look so much better.

“Multiplayer is horrendous, especially in Gears 2, not because it’s bad; Horde is great offline or in Private matches. I just can’t get a game, maybe it’s the servers, maybe it’s my connection being too awesome or maybe it’s even ME being too awesome! I just can’t get into a public match with lag or disconnection. ”

Horde is fun, but can get boring and monotonous. It must be your connection, for someone from the UK, I have no problems finding games. Ever.
You cannot criticise the entire multi-player aspect of the game, which is huge by the way, just because you “cannot find a game”. If you cannot find a game on Annex, Guardian or Execution, there is seriously something wrong with your Xbox. If I can find submission & KoTH games within 30seconds, you can find the popular gamemodes.

“If you want to sum the entire Gears franchise in 7 seconds, here you are:”

“Sum up the whole franchise”? Ummmm, seriously? I think not.

I do agree about the whole “Worm thing”, lol, it really is something that Epic got wrong. Nice idea for sinking the cities, but its just a huge WTF moment. I get the whole lambent part, with the Brumak quadrupalling its size, which I guess is what happened to a rockworm…but it just doesnt work.
But, every game and film have their crazy moments, as is this one is for Gears.

    ========

Hardly a “review”, based on your own (bad) personal experience which clouds your judgement. Whilst the game does have flaws, to be praising only the Level-Design and Detail is not only harsh, but unjustified, and completely and utterly wrong.
Before criticising, give the game more than 5minutes, actually get online and play multiplayer (that is, if you can manage to reload a gun) and then make a review. As it stands, this “review”, is attempting to be like Yahtzee, but which fails on humour and sarcasm.
The SP isnt for everyone, but I for one, was totally engrossed in it.

    • Nathan Hardisty

First off, thanks for taking the time to comment with resorting to personal attacks.

“Um…fighting Lambent Brumaks, Activating the Lightmass Bomb, helping/saving Stranded in fight-scenes, confronting the Queen…”

Brumarks I never got to experience, unless you mean the turret thing at the start of the game. Activating the lightmass bomb meant going through a boss, to which I had help from a helicopter. Was an annoying fight but very well scripted.

“Looks like it just provoked some emotions right there.
Its not supposed to make you angry, just a part of the story.”

There isn’t anything wrong with emotion in video games, I welcome it. There’s obvious themes trying to make you all sad and angry in the brutality of war, which is true, but it’s not done as well as say The Hurt Locker.

“Its a one-button cover-shooter, its simple, easy and very effective. Find me another game like it. Its that whole taking-cover bit that makes Gears: Gears.
If you play the campaigns on Insane, you will find yourself taking cover often for fear of being annihilated. It can be an awesome feeling.”

I love buckling down and the sound design is probably a highlight of the game. I played the game on ‘Normal’ difficulty (or whatever witty equivalent it was). I just never saw the necessity of cover to cover combat.

“Illusion”? In what way is it an illusion? Are unique weapons, gameplay, cover system and game adaptations not good enough? At least its not a generic, boring, vanilla shooter like COD.

I don’t think there’s one unique weapon in the game except for the Hammer of the Dawn. The illusion is that there’s apparently so many weapons and environments that it’s supposed to feel like war, in the end the curtain just draws back to reveal a linear corridor shooter.

    • Nathan Hardisty

“(Ignoring that you call them “Aliens”) Ummm, thats exactly how I play. The cover-system is very fluid compared to Gears1, although the delay out of ROADIE RUN (not Rodeo…) for firing does slow the game down.
My only complaint is the awkward way of changing direction when roadie-ing without a jump – but its just a case of getting used to it.”

I know the locust come from underground. They behave like aliens, they invade like aliens, the look like aliens.

“Seriously, complaining about reloading? A distraction? Hardly at all. To be frank, if you are reloading, and find it a distraction at close range, then either kill them before running out of bullets or fire from further away.
The reloading system is another thing what separates Gears from other shooters: somebody in combat, losing health, can gain an active to use on a new full-health target who is coming up from behind. Everybody fails reloads, even “pros”. Its an additional gameplay factor thrown in, not a mini sidegame, to spice the game up.”

It looks like a mini-sidegame to me. I can pretty much find it in Warioware under a different design. What I’m saying is that it’s a distraction for a four seconds, but in such a frantic shooter it shouldn’t even have to take my eyes off the enemies.

“Gore not needed? WHAT?! Ive never come across any “gore” thats not needed.”

I don’t think if you chainsaw a humanoid like creature even such as the Locust, they will just spray there innards all over your face. I understand we’re trying to capture the grossness of this war, but at least be realistic about it.

“Every game has a lot of problems, but the problems in Gears dont stop it from being a great game.”

Depends what you think the problems are.

    • Nathan Hardisty

“Quite frankly, level design was way better in Gears1. Compare Subway, Tyro-Station, Canals, Gridlock and especially Mansion between the 2 games, and then with GoW2 maps. The Dark-Corners maps for GoW2 were a much needed addition, and look so much better.”

I agree. The mansion parts and the night environments were very well designed. The multiplayer maps are some of the best I’ve seen in ANY shooter.

“Horde is fun, but can get boring and monotonous. It must be your connection, for someone from the UK, I have no problems finding games. Ever.
You cannot criticise the entire multi-player aspect of the game, which is huge by the way, just because you “cannot find a game”. I can criticise a game because I can’t find a public match. Epic Games had great European relations with UT3, so I don’t see why I can’t find a match. All of my friends and many UK people on this site have the same issues.

““Sum up the whole franchise”? Ummmm, seriously? I think not.”

Sarcasm really, but it sums up Gears writing. Some of the Gears 2 writing is a lot stronger though.

“Hardly a “review”, based on your own (bad) personal experience which clouds your judgement. Whilst the game does have flaws, to be praising only the Level-Design and Detail is not only harsh, but unjustified, and completely and utterly wrong.

The SP isnt for everyone, but I for one, was totally engrossed in it.”

Oddly enough I hate Yahtzee more than I hate anyone else in the entire cavalcade of existance. That includes the cast of Twilight. My writing influences come from Anthony Burch and Charlie Brooker.

I do quite like Gears, but I don’t want to big the things I like about it. The shooting is more than competent, and cover works well at times.

I played through both Gears on co-op, and found it to be a nice experience, but not the one I hear everyone else having.

  • True Wittness

Nathan Hardisty…you’re one of the stupidest persons i’ve ever seen write an article. if you hate it, don’t just bash and make lies up about it. get you facts straight before writing. you’re so pathetic. haha.

    • Nathan Hardisty

      I don’t think I ever made lies.

At least my name is getting recognised.

I like how you laugh at your own joke too, here I can do the same.

You are such a fanboy! Haha.

  • 360 only does flop games

The series is garbage, that’s why. :-)

  • I love Gears2

I disagree. Gears is one of the best 360 franchise till date. Only thing I hate about Gears 2 is the net code. Since TU 3, I am not able to find a match n hence I stopped playing it. Other than that, its a beautiful game. The concept is amazing and wonderfully executed. I don’t know on what basis you said that its not a good game :(

    • Nathan Hardisty

I liked the base concept – “Survival of the human race.”, and some of the main concepts are ok.

I just don’t like the narrative one bit, how it takes you point-to-point with greedy depressive themes.

I liked it in the end but it’s not a totally beautiful game.

    2010 games > 2008 games..
    chill out haters and lovers..

    grow up man.

see i cant say that i havent played this game i am a ps3 fan hate the xbox but….you cant say gears is a game no one plays….that was one of the greatest games i ever had the pleasure of experiencing….although yes the online Fuhkd up thats no reason to totally bomb on a game….look at mw2 i sold it already…that game is awesome but too much bullshit this time around which took away the excitement for me. im sure many ppl will agree with me…even some ps3 heads cant lie gears is sick!! epic just needed to leave the online as it was in gears 1.

    • Nathan Hardisty

‘Games That Nobody Plays Anymore’ is a column title that isn’t meant to be taken literal.

I’m not insulting you directly but people don’t take the time to look at the site and see it’s a series.

Of course people play Gears, people still play all the games I review. I just want to get this out of the way like I did with GTA IV.

  • Andy

If you hate it, thrn why fucking play it?

And it’s a roadie run, you jackass. Go back to God of War 3 and its “epic” storytelling and relateable protagonist…

    • Nathan Hardisty

God of War’s storytelling and narrative sucks.

I trust you think I’m a Sony fanboy with that comment. Nice.

      I prefer my 360.

  • franwex

Wow, people are getting their “hate” on today!
Well, Yeah, I agree that GOW is overrated.
However, I will have to disagree with everything else you said. The article gives the impression that you only played GOW for 10 minutes and already had cognitive dissonance towards it from the beginning. You went through some pretty fun game with a fine tooth comb looking for flaws.
The games are overrated, but not as bad as you make them out to be. They are just easy to pick up and fun. What’s wrong with that?
Try to be more open minded!

    • Nathan Hardisty

I liked Gears, in the end . The gameplay was fine but everything else was lacking.

I am open minded but when a game like this is considered to be ”amazing” and ”innovative” then something isn’t right.

  • Blake

Is there a reason that you brought this game up again? All you do is write about how horrible this game is but it is a year and a half old. Why write an article about it? It is a little late. If you had wrote this when it came out, you know, sorta as a review, then fine. I just dont see the point of bashing the game at this point. Yes, Gears of War 2 MP was horrendous. But we already knew that. What a waste of an article. Why dont you crawl out from underneath that rock you are under and focus your attention on newer games.

    • Nathan Hardisty

The site isn’t just review-centirc. ‘Games That Nobody Plays Anymore’ is a column that reviews 1 year old+ games that people have either forgotten about or just not play anymore.

And thanks, I would focus on newer games but I’m not greedy with reviews.

  • Wes

I agree i hate Glitches of war. Lagging out, Praying to God you get host, and.. Experiencing more lag and tea bagging then ever before. This game use to be fun. But it shows what happens when MS puts pressure on developers. To finnish a game faster just to boost console sales.

Ive lost count how many “fixes” this game has had. And yet, Mayority of the problems still exist. Ill only buy GoW3 if its on Dedicated servers. And thats a promise. But for now ill let my Carmine die every fucking time thanks to little Tommy crappy connectionin Japan

  • joe

i love gears of war and play it from time to time i will admit no one plays it but the only reason is because epic ruined gears 2.Gears one was my favorite game ever i played it countless nights of it,it was the best game to play when you come home high or drunk epically with friends i think the only reason u dont like it is because u take it to serious its a arcade game with awesome graphics

  • Alexander

I love Gears sooo much. Not only that… but my girlfriend does too! You have to love when your girlfriend can chainsaw you without the least bit of remorse. Gears of War for life! (I think I might marry this girl :D )

Do not buy from EPIC games guys… I have been a gears of war player for 4 years and a senior member on the forums for 2 years. For April fools they made changes to the game like, instant kill melees and unstoppable chainsaws. Now im all for jokes but this is a bad idea considering all the problems already in the game. So as a senior member on the forums I posted my opinion saying the joke was a bad idea that pushed people away from the game. AND THEY BANNED ME FOR LIFE!!! they said i was a troll and banned me… what a joke!!!! all the money i gave them.. all the time i spent on their forums.. they have lost my respect. Spread this news of how mean and rediculous the guys at EPIC are. They never listen to their fans. they make fun of them with more problems as a joke and then BAN them for life for giving an opinion.

Its good to be passionate when writing an article but I find this very jaded. You artrical is biassed and weak at best.

The only valid point you gave was the lag.

Gow is very orginal and nothing can compare in IMO for appeal and long lasting online play.

What is your favorite shooter? mw2? That game is an over hyped run of the mill shooter.

If you are complaing about reloading then maybe you should play super smash bros instead.

Though I personally disagree with some of your points, well written article. I do agree however, that at the time of writing, the multiplayer was horrendous. When the game launched there was a mediocre rank system (based on solely the TrueSkill rank of a person, as opposed to the exp. leveling system adopted by Halo and the COD titles), horrible connection issues (it personally took me around 30 minutes to get into a match) and other minor qualms. However, the recent title updates have done wonders in improving the game, as a new exp. ranking system was introduced, player matches were added, Horde has been tweaked to make joining matches much more streamlined and east, and private matches have been improved as well by giving the host more control. I personally enjoy the game myself, but it can be a tad over rated at times, just as Uncharted, LBP, Halo, and the COD games are.

The most linear game I’ve ever played, worse than Philips CD-i games. I just thought that the same enemies turning up at the same doors on the same schedule and requiring 200 rounds to kill (or more if your timing was premature) was missing only the trains that ran on time. I actually avoided visiting a few people I used to know ‘cos I thought they would try and pull me into a multi player game – aarg!
