Turbine Acquired By Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Seems that Boston-area video game company Turbine was acquired by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. This move is just one of several that Warner Brothers has made in recent years, notably acquiring Midway last year, and TT games in 2007 (Makers of the Lego games, among others).

Turbine is a major player in the creation of MMOs, with Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online and Asheron’s Call being their products.  It seems Warner Brothers might be interested in getting their hands wet in the MMO realm, and I’m curious as to what project will ultimately end up being theirs (Lego Universe is currently without a publisher, and is in closed Beta… probably a little late to that party, though).

Turbine also held an exclusive license over internet-based video games based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels, which was just one of the reasons that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment acquired them.

So congratulations to the folks at Turbine.  Warner Bros. acquired some good talent in this pickup.
