Both Marvel and Capcom are in completely different places then they were 10 years ago. The main change comes in Marvel’s explosion of box office success. Placing Marvel’s lesser known characters at the forefront of everyone’s mind. With this and the recent buyout from Disney (who are never gun shy about cross promotional tie ins), is the game we are gonna get in MvC3 going to use the traditional comic (616) designs or are we in for something akin to Marvel Films vs Street Fighter The Movie The Game?
Iron Man 2 is set to dominate the box office this weekend and the Thor movie is set to come out next year. Also, with the confirmation of Chris Evans as Captain America we finally have the face of our big three–our Avengers. The Disney marketing machine has to be aware that even the bad marvel flicks (Daredevil) are still multi-million dollar paydays. It has to have crossed the House of Mickey’s mind to place the feature film designs and even go as so far to include the likes of Tobey Maguire spouting off one liners as he dukes it out with Ryu.
I wouldn’t mind if they had alternate costumes for a few of Marvel’s heroes (I think it would be a nice bit of fan service), but with the success of the Ultimate Alliance games it seems that MvC3 could use classic designs for their upcoming game and no one would bat an eyelash. With Disney backing Marvel we may get Epic Mickey fighting along side Iron Man, but let’s hope that we aren’t forced to see Nic Cage blaze up as Ghost Rider (you know they’ve thought about it). After all, there is a whole generation of Marvel fans who see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Vinnie Jones as “The Juggernaut, bitch!” So, which Marvel Universe are we getting? The 616? The Ultimate? The Movie-verse? Or some amalgamation of the three?
Who do you want to see coming up in the new game? With only half of the roster all but confirmed, are you expecting any surprises a-la a Chris Evans/Captain America concept design for the new flick?
I for one really just want Viewtiful Joe. Henshin a go go baby!
