Borderlands was one of last years best co-op experiences where you could team up with three other friends and have fun around Pandora.  Even today, more than 6 months after its release it is hard to beat it for co-op fun.  The game received much critical acclaim and praise for its all round gameplay and graphical style.  When the main campaign left fans wanting more, the obvious answer was DLC and three have been released to date. This review is for the first two of those DLC add-ons in one handy pack that you can buy off the shelf without any lengthy downloads, but are they up to the same high standard as Borderlands was?

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot offer two very different gaming experiences and I’ll  take you through each one in turn.

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is much darker than the main Borderlands campaign and in fact reminded me of Left4Dead2 in its style. You should expect 6-8 hours of gameplay through the zombie infested expansion and although the story and atmosphere is much darker, the general pace of the game and mechanics are very similar to Borderland main campaign. Therefore if you enjoyed Borderlands then you should enjoy this, especially if you are also fond of Left4Dead and its zombie killing antics.

For most of the game your task will be searching and retrieving pieces of antidote to reverse the actions of Dr.Zed who has turned everyone into a zombie, this involves much trekking from point to point but the hordes of zombies to kill and the tone of the humor involved means you rarely notice the distances you having to travel. There are 20 missions in total and plenty of new weapons to kill those pesky zombies with.  All in all there is not much I’d recommend for any improvements on this piece of DLC.

Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot on the other hand jumps on the band wagon of Horde style gameplay and will appeal to gamers who like battling against wave after wave of increasingly more difficult enemies.  There are 25 waves in total, broken down into five rounds of five waves.  For those of you unfamiliar with the Horde gameplay, in each wave you are challenged with enemies that increase in numbers and difficulty that you will need to kill in order to bring on the next wave. In this expansion the waves come in the following flavours; Starter, Gun, Horde, Badass, and Boss although enemies that make up each wave are randomly generated as are the bonuses you will receive upon successfully clearing a wave.  If you get the right three companions then it will be a blast for all of those 25 waves.

There is however one major downside to this expansion and it could be the difference between people purchasing this and not, there is no option to save your progress. Yes you read that correctly, you have to go from wave 1-25 in one sitting which will take around an hour and a half to two hours. That is maybe a bit more commitment that some gamers can commit, for others that will be easy.

Marks Final Word: The big question you’ll want to know if whether this add-on pack is worth your hard earned money and in a word, Yes it is.  If you loved Borderlands you cannot fail to enjoy these but just be aware of the time commitment required for Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot.

If you would like the chance to try the add-ons for yourself leave a comment below explaining your favorite part of Borderlands.  What’s that you haven’t played Borderlands at all yet?  Well look no further as we will be giving away not only the add-on pack for the Xbox 360, but we will also be giving away a copy of Borderlands for the Xbox 360.  So here is your chance to play the game that features some of the best co-op experience to date and if you have already played Borderlands keep your fingers crossed that you win the add-on pack.

In your comment please leave which giveaway you would like to be entered in.  Contest ends June 3rd 2010 so hurry before it is to late.

Good Luck and here is to seeing you in Pandora!

I absolutely love Borderlands!!! I haven’t been able to buy any of the DLC though…it would be absolutely incredible if I won the Borderlands DLC!! I would seriously play it every day haha!

  • Ackis

The best DLC of the bunch isn’t on the disk. The General Knoxx was just amazing.

The game is just incredible, I wished I had real life buddies who play it.

Would love to be entered in for the DLC disk.

  • I would like to be entered to win the game, not the DLC disc.

  • RJMontalvo

I’ve rented Borderlands through XB360 a few times now and have absolutely adored playing through it as a soldier and siren. Would love to finally own the actual game disc so I can free up that spot on my queue.

  • Borderlands is one of the best FPRS RPGs (if not the only one) that I throughally enjoyed.

If the massive amounts of weapons and crazy charecters in the world of Pandora aren’t enough for you, then maybe the CL4P-TP can show you the way to hilarity.

That has to be my favorite part – the Claptraps. Between hearing them beg for their life, running away and screaming, or being just plain sarcastic, they really make my day. Just listen to those friendly little guys!

  • Please enter me to win the game itself.

Thanks & good luck to everyone!

  • Jankee

I love the humor, especially the claptraps. I’d like the DLC pack.

  • Marc

I like the skill trees and customizing my character.

I’d like to win the game.

  • enter me in for the game please…hear nothing but good things about it and have never tried it.

  • Loved Borderlands but already cleared the main game (twice) so put me in for the add-on disc 🙂

  • Bryan

I’d love to win the Add-On disc myself! 🙂

My favorite part of Borderlands isn’t really a specific section of the game. But, times that I’ve spent playing with friends like @Cleaner7 and @OrenGiladi have been the greatest times with Borderlands!

  • DarthMazza

The best part about Borderlands is Scooter!! Would like the DLC Disc.

  • Onsyman

I havn’t played Borderlands yet though my friends are playing it right now and they’re loving every moment of it, the best thing I’ve seen is the insane upgrades and customization of your character, also being a 4-player co-op experience!
therefore I’d like to participate in the Borderlands 360 game giveaway!

  • I borrowed my brothers copy and played local coop together but would love to be able to play over LIVE. Enter me in the 360 game disk please!

  • Jack

I’ve never played Borderlands, but I have a friend who’s got it and is constantly talking about it. I imagine my favourtie part of Borderlands would be playing multiplayer with him.

I’d like to be entered to win the copy of the game on Xbox 360 please.

  • m3talst0rm

I love Borderlands…I never thought the leveling up in an fps would be so satisfying, but it is. The local and online multiplayer is where this games shines. It’s almost like traveling around Oblivion with friends, and guns, and, well, it’s not really like that at all…but it’s fun!

    • m3talst0rm

Sorry…I’d like to be entered into the Add-on disk for the 360 contest. Thanks!

  • A Dark Knight 2

Awesome article and another cool contest!
I’d like the chance to win the DLC. I traded another game in for Borderlands a few weeks back and haven’t had time to play it yet. I anticipate many favorite parts based on several reviews I’ve read and heard..!
    Thanks guys!

  • Please enter me to enter the main game. I’ve heard good things about it but I haven’t the money to purchase it yet.

  • Rut3g3r

I’m not too far into Borderlands, but I couldn’t imagine playing it outside of co-op! Particular highlight so far is the interplay between Hunter and Soldier, one drawing the melee classes into combat while the other picks off the ranged targets. Magic 🙂

    • Rut3g3r

Eep, forgot to ask – please enter me for the DLC disc. Thanks!

  • Joe Perry

Is this is the retail game giveaway, please enter me for the pc version of it. If it is just one DLC, please enter me for the Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot DLC.

  • Leon Durham

I haven’t played Borderlands so enter me for the game.
