New This Week. 30th May 2010

Welcome to Platform Nation’s weekly feature where we inform you, the reader, on all the game releases you should be looking out for.

Each week as well as bringing you news about which games are due to hit the shelves in the seven days ahead, the Platform Nation writer will choose their pick of the week.

My pick for this week is:

Alpha Protocol

Alpha Protocol: Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Sega, Alpha Protocol is a third-person shooter espionage RPG. It is due for release on June 1st in North America and it is currently out in Europe as of May 28th.

My View: “Alpha Protocol is a game you appreciate for its ambition” (Kevin VanOrd, Gamespot Alpha Protocol Review), is the best description of how this game will turn out. Alpha Protocol in no way looks like a polished product. From what I’ve read and seen, it’s littered with technical issues and has sub-par shooting at best. That being said, Alpha Protocol has one thing going for it and that’s its heavy emphasis on player choice. You can kill off major characters mid-plot completely cutting their story lines, and do a slew of other things that make the experience you have with the game truly unique. Every choice has some level of consequence, even more so than games like Mass Effect. I’ve always criticized the Mass Effect series for allowing me  to side-step tough choices. If you had a high Paragon or Renegade you could easily ensure that you could always talk your way out of a difficult situation. Apart from the ending (I’ll avoid spoiling it for the stragglers out there), most of my choices either didn’t have as big of an impact as I wanted, or I was able to fix up my mistakes too easily after my choices were made. Alpha Protocol wants you to make tough choices and you better god damn believe the outcomes are going to matter.

  • Doesn’t really seem to be anything good this week. Maybe Alpha Protocol which I hear is flawed, but still a decent game.

  • Mark Withers. (MarkWithers)

not that I’m really complaining but after the rush of high quality games, my wallet thanks game developers for a slow week

  • Yeah it’s pretty lacking this week. It seems that we’re finally hitting the summer drought. I’m not complaining though, we’ve had a lot of releases in the past month.
