Upcoming SRPG “Skulls Of The Shogun” Detailed

Two days, two downloadable game announcements I’m unreasonably excited for.  This E3 season is already not looking good for my wallet.

Newly independent game designer Jake Kazdal (who has previously worked on a variety of titles including Rez and Command & Conquer 4) gives some insight into his vision for the new game:

“I am a massive Advance Wars fan. I think it’s a near perfect game series. That being said, I don’t feel the entire genre has evolved much over the past many years, the one notable exception being the brilliant yet punishingly hard Valkyria Chronicles from my Alma mater Sega Japan. When my friend Dylan Cuthbert’s Pixeljunk Monsters came out I was hopelessly addicted to it, and realized how much fun simple but deep gameplay, charming HD, 2D graphics and sitting on the couch with a good friend could be — it reminded me of the very best Super Nintendo games era and how much I used to enjoy those games. I wanted to mix my love of the supernatural in Japan, the ultimate warriors — the samurai — the brilliant tactical yet fast-paced, streamlined fun of Advance Wars, and the beauty, deceptively simple depth and presentation of the Pixeljunk games and others like it that can take the crazy power of modern videogame platforms in a whole new direction. It’s the ultimate project for me — literally a dream come true.”

Kazdal hopes to streamline and advance the SRPG genre, and to recapture the fun of the SNES era.  Lofty goals to be sure, but reading 1up’s great interview with him, it’s hard not to get caught up in his excitement.  Development on the title is expected to come to an end in 6 to 9 months, and the murderous little samurai skeletons will be heading to XBLA and PC.  This is one to keep your eye on.
