There was plenty of speculation about Aperture Science’s mysterious announcement regarding it’s canceled Portal 2 event at E3, but I don’t think many people would have guessed that Gabe Newell would be walking onstage at Sony’s press conference. Contradicting his prior (and frequent) criticisms of their system, he stated his belief in its success, and announced the release of Portal 2 for the PS3.
This wasn’t just a multi-platform announcement, however, as he went on to say:
I’m excited that Steam will be part of that experience, and I think that gamers will be delighted with features like Steam Cloud and automatic updates that will make the PS3 version of Portal 2 the best version on any console.
As a PS3 owner myself, I’m very excited to finally see some Valve love on the system, and I hope to see continued support in the future (maybe in the vein of some LFD ports…). I just hope this doesn’t signal a complete 180 in Newell’s point of view, and that he continues to develop for both systems – fanboyism doesn’t seem to be a wise developer choice, after all.
