Character Of The Week: ToeJam & Earl

Ow, we want the funk
Give up the funk
Ow, we need the funk
We gotta have that funk”

George Clinton

It’s almost as if the great Funkadelic Master wrote those lyrics just for one of Sega’s most beloved games and this weeks COTW.

Hello Platform Nation readers. This week we are giving a big 4th of July salute to ToeJam & Earl. They were a cult favorite of gamers around the world and starred in three of their own games:

  • ToeJam & Earl (1991, Sega Genesis)
  • ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron (1993, Sega Genesis)
  • ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth (2002, Microsoft Xbox)

ToeJam & Earl were two alien rappers who crash landed on planet Earth. Their main goal in their first game was to collect the broken pieces of their space ship so they could put it back together and get the funk back home. After finally escaping all the perils of Earth like man-eating mailboxes, giant hamsters, and packs of nerds, they make it home to start their second game. In Panic on Funkotron, our funky duo discover that a bunch of Earthlings have stowed away on their spaceship only to wreak havoc on ToeJam & Earl’s home planet, Funkotron. In order to save Funkotron, they have to race across the planet capturing the Earthlings in jars so they can send them back to Earth. Finally, in Mission to Earth, ToeJam & Earl travel back to Earth to find the 12 Sacred Albums of Funk and use them to defeat Anti-Funk the enemy of all things funky!

ToeJam & Earl have had mixed reviews with the critics but have earned themselves a cult status among many gamers for their great humor and funky music. This is why they are Platform Nation’s COTW. Personally, I would love to see a new adventure come to our 360’s, PS3’s and Wii’s (the first two are Virtual Console games for the Wii). Maybe they could get George Clinton to do some music for the game… “Ow We want the Funk. Sega give us the Funk!”

Thanks for reading this week’s Character of the Week. Check back next Monday to find out who Platform Nation’s COTW will be. Hope everybody had a happy 4th of July!!!
