As leaks and reveals go, you can’t really get much more obscure and tenuous than the rumour currently doing the rounds that Valve are working away on the development of the long-awaited Half-Life 2: Episode 3. A canny Steam user has had a poke around the Alien Swarm SDK and turned up a few assets with names bound to send a shiver down the spine of anyone desperately longing for Gordon Freeman to crowbar his way back into our lives.
Apparently, there are a series of hint options available for info nodes in the SDK going by the prefix ‘Ep3’, as well as a few ‘HL1’s and even a tantalizing ‘Aperture: Nest’. Take a look for yourself at the evidence that Episode 3 may be in development and see what you think. Now, this isn’t exactly conclusive proof of – well – anything at all but when we’re talking about the next episode of one of the most highly rated games of all time, it’s no wonder that the internet is currently abuzz with excited chatter about the potential return of Gordon and chums.
It’s getting on for three years since Episode 2 saw the light of day and not far off six years since Half-Life 2’s triumphant emergence from an initial five-year development cycle (itself the subject, of course, of a very significant leak). Nobody is expecting Valve to break the habit of a lifetime and rush the next chapter out in double-quick time, but could this be the sign we’ve been waiting for that the Half-Life 2 pie is finally back in the oven?
