Heroes Of Newerth Is Free To Play This Week

Heroes of Newerth is free to play this week! Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game; Defense of the Ancients and League of Legends also belong to that category. Don’t know what a MOBA is? Check out this article I wrote describing the new genre.

Starting now and for the remainder of this week, HoN will be available to anyone willing to give it a shot. All you need to do is head over to the Heroes of Newerth website, create a free account, download the game, and start playing!

Heroes of Newerth features 68 fully playable characters, each with his or her own unique skill set. Once you select a champion, prepare for immediate and intense action! You and four other players are pitted against another team of five with the goal of destroying the other team’s base.

Over the course of the match, your champion gains gold and experience. Upon gaining a level, you automatically earn a small stat boost and a skill point. You must choose carefully which skill to invest in; keep in mind what the enemy champions are capable of, as well as what you want to accomplish. Do you want to play defensively and support? Are you in favor of pushing lanes and playing offensively? Perhaps you would rather prey upon unsuspecting enemies or shine in a team battle; different champions are partial to certain play styles.

Along with gaining levels to increase your power, there are also shops stocked with weapons, armor, healing items, and other stat boosting items. You also start with enough gold to make a few minor purchases; I would recommend a small stat boosting item and a healing item.

Things aren’t going so well? You may start a vote to concede at the 15 minute mark. Thus emerges HoN’s biggest flaw; your entire team must unanimously vote to concede or the match will continue.  More often than not, you will have a feeding uber nubsauce that won’t agree to concede and your beatdown will continue until the next vote or your base succumbs to the enemy.

HoN has a steep learning curve, which is why I was happy to see a full week made available for free play. For those who haven’t played a MOBA yet, I would recommend playing HoN to get your feet wet.
