Age Of Empires Goes Casual?

The venerable strategy series Age of Empires (which I will be covering again in this week’s edition of “Remembering the Fallen”) has risen from the ashes under a new developer.

Robot Entertainment has just announced Age of Empires Online, and it’s clear the franchise is going in a completely new direction under this new developer.   It has more of a cartoony feel than before, and the focus is definitely on the social aspect of maintaining an empire.

The cartoony and casual style is evident even in this promo image.

You will have your own home city that will grow and expand on its own, even when you are not online.  Details are scarce, but appears that there will be some cooperative moments where you can work with your friends, but also go into a PvP mode.
Details on pricing are also scarce, although it looks like it’s going to be a freenium model where the basic game is free to play but some extra features will cost money to access.

There is a closed beta going on, so go ahead and sign up if you are an Age fan like myself.
For more information, check out the game’s website here.

I wouldn’t go about calling it new developers considering 75% of the people working on it are from Ensemble.
