Batweek: Ultimate Batman

Batman has been around for decades, his stories have crossed centuries and millennia. He has fought against science and magic, humans and aliens, natural and supernatural. With stories this varied, everyone will have a preferred Batman or a favoured Batman story. So in celebration of Batweek here at Platform Nation, I asked my fellow writers to vote for whom or what should be included in the ultimate Batman story. Now I should point out that I am trying to create the Ultimate Batman collection rather than just name peoples favourites. With that in mind, I created a short list for the main choices. I picked one from a game, one from a comic and one from a movie/TV show

So let’s begin with the hero. Who would be the Ultimate Batman?

  1. Michael Keaton from the 1989 Batman Movie
  2. Kevin Conroy from Arkham Asylum and the 90’s cartoon
  3. Year 1 Batman.

The writer’s choice: Kevin Conroy

This is a brilliant way to start Ultimate Batman. Conroy, is the voice that I hear whenever I read a Batman story, this is due mostly because of the brilliant animated Batman series of the 1990’s which I grew up watching. While Conroy may have been replaced by Christian Bale for the later generations who did not see the 90’s TV show. Thankfully, Conroy has been firmly re-established in the minds of gamers because of Arkham Asylum, which is arguably the best Batman if not superhero game ever made. Michael Keaton came a close second with Year 1 Batman failing to even get off the mark.

So we know have the Ultimate Batman, but you can’t have a good story without a villain. If I said Batman, you’d say Robin (he’ll come later) given a second choice, I say Batman you’d say Joker.

So who is the Ultimate Joker?

The Choices were:

  1. Heath Ledger from a Dark Knight
  2. Mark Hamill from Arkham Asylum and the 90’s TV show
  3. The Joker from a Killing Joke

The writers choice: Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger really made the Joker his own, while still maintaining little aspects from all Jokers that preceded him. The story goes that to create his Joker Heather Ledger locked himself away and studied the Joker to get into his mind. Some conspiracy theorists believe that it was this that actually drove him slightly mad which contributed to his sad death in 2008. True or not, anyone that is dedicated enough to try and get into the mind of a psychopath in order to portray them realistically deserves all the accolades that he can get, and I can think of no higher award than be included in Platform Nation’s ultimate Batman.

I also asked the writers for some additional suggestions as to whom else should be included in this Ultimate Batman. As I hinted at before, the writers opted for Robin, with a joint second for the Riddler and Catwomen.

Writer’s choice:  Robin and The Riddler

Now this is shaping up to be quite a formidable challenge for Batman, but he has bested both The Riddler and Joker before so I’m also going to include a wild card. In all the years of Batman, there has only been one man who has actually beaten Batman. The one and only Bane

So we know have all the major players in this ultimate selection but we still need a writer and an artist, so who is up to take on this challenge? Frank Miller whose year one storyline arc is one of the best, of maybe Stan Lee, a little outside the box but this is the Ultimate Batman, reality need not apply.

No, while those writers are very talented and there are several other writers who have done Batman tremendous justice over the years. I believe only one man can tell the story of Batman, Robin, Joker, Riddler and Bane and that is Alan Moore. I will give Frank Miller, a nod however as the artist. The style of Sin City would be perfect in this story.

So Platform Nation here is the Ultimate Batman as chosen by the writers of Platform Nation and a few additions by me. It’s my article so sue me.
