Now, this is impressive.
Nehrim: At Fate’s Edge is a total conversion mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It uses the Oblivion engine, but apparently nothing else, creating a hand-designed world of a similar size to Tamriel, with a main campaign and side quests, fully voiced and with an original score (which the developers offer as a free download). Developers SureAI are also supporting the mod with patches and providing an interactive map of the world on their site. Their motivation for the project was ‘for those players who love RPGs and were disappointed by Oblivion on that score. Nehrim will be a role playing game with elements of action, [not an] action game with elements of role playing games.’
Now the bad news – at the moment, it’s in German. An English translation (script only, preserving the original German acting) is in the works and will apparently be released next month. Seems like it’ll be worth waiting for, though. I’m one of those PC gamers who generally avoid mods; after all, I’ve got enough professionally developed games to keep me busy. Nehrim looks like it’ll change all that. It looks to be a must for PC owners who loved Oblivion – and, being free, there’s no reason not to try it. Those who want to try it out, or brush up on their languages, can get the installer here.
