PAX Prime 2010: Slam Bolt Scrappers Impressions

Slam Bolt Scrappers…what can I say about this game that hasn’t already been said about Smash Bros., Tetris, and tower defense?  Slam Bolt Scrappers is a hard to explain mix of all three games that works surprisingly well.

So, there are these bugs.  You smash the bugs and they become Tetris-like blocks.  You build the blocks into squares of a single color to create weapons.  Different color blocks make different weapon types; the bigger the square, the stronger the weapon.  The weapons attack the other team’s weapon-tower.  Oh, and there are these quick-time-like events that you have to complete successfully to make you respawn faster.  Like I said, words just don’t do it justice.

Fire Hose Games has really done something different and familiar all at the same time, but it’s so different, that it’s hard to describe without having the controller in your hands.  That’s the what Eitan Glinert (the Fire Chief) told me when I went to his booth, and he couldn’t have been more right.  My only fear is that a game this special might get overlooked because of how bizarre it seems at first.  Hopefully there will be a nice demo available when Slam Bolt Scrappers drops so everyone can get a chance to have the same great experience I had.

Slam Bolt Scrappers will launch as a PSN exclusive title early 2011.
