Earlier today, Apple uploaded the iOS 4.1 update to iTunes. Available for iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and iPod Touches, the upgrade includes a litany of bug fixes and non-gaming additions. Still, since this is Platform Nation, there is one huge game-related feature coming with it. For iPhone 3GS, 4, and Touches, Game Center is now unlocked.
As it stands, presumably, current iPhone apps have to be updated to include Game Center functionality. For example, Angry Birds was demoed as being compatible, but it doesn’t show up in my list yet. Likewise, with the upgrade only being available for a few hours, I’ve yet to add any friends or gain any achievements.
Game Center is Apple’s portable answer to Xbox Live, which Microsoft is bringing to Windows Phone 7. At the same time, both OpenFeint and Plus+ have tried to fill this void on iOS devices. Game Center unites games in one application, allowing you to have one friend list, Achievements, etc.
Are you going to hop into the Game Center?
