Amid all the macho posturing of this year’s Tokyo Game Show there seems to be a soft spoken gem. The latest trailer for Level 5’s Ni No Kuni (literally: “Second Land”) shows off a bit of gameplay and a lot of gorgeous art direction. Telling a Neverending Story-esque tale of a young boy who travels to a mystical world through a magic book, the graphics take cues from Wind Waker’s cel-shaded sensibilities and classic Disney animated films. While there isn’t much shown of the actual gameplay, it looks similar to recent traditional JRPGs like Tales of Vesperia or Eternal Sonata, with characters interacting freely in a 3D arena. Children’s entertainment, you could argue, but from the looks of it it’s shaping up to be the very best kind of children’s entertainment.
Ni No Kuni is set for Japanese release on Nintendo DS December 2010, and on PS3 sometime in 2011.
