Xbox Head Says “Who Needs Blu-ray?”

Sometimes you have to wonder what compels people to say the things they do.  In an interview with, Microsoft’s Xbox & Entertainment Director, Stephen McGill, decided to earn the Foot In Mouth achievement by going off on Blu-ray. When asked about the DVD format holding back the Xbox, he responded:

I think people may have spoken about that originally, but that’s long gone. I think people now recognise what a smart decision it was to keep the pricing low, and actually Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format. People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay. So, who needs Blu-ray?

Hmm.. considering that there have been and continue to be concerns about the capacity of the DVD format that is utilized by the Xbox 360, not to mention the fairly rapid adoption of Blu-ray in homes, I’d say there are quite a few people who enjoy Blu-ray.

I’m all for bravado, but it’s not like the Xbox has something the the PS3 doesn’t in this case either.  The PS3 can stream video AND play Blu-ray, so if we’re playing the comparison game, wouldn’t you want one that gives you a choice? I know I would.

Which reminds me, I really need to pick up a PS3.

  • I disagree. Blu-ray IS just a passing media format. Everything will be online.
