Playbrains Announces New Platformer Sideway

Yeah, that’s “Sideway” and not “Sideways,” an important distinction for development studio Playbrains. Scott Simpson, studio director at Playbrains, announced today on the PlayStation Blog that their new game will be an adventure platformer coming exclusively to the PS3 in 2011.

The two pieces of concept art and one poster—comprised of what I’m sure can also be classified as “more concept art”—came along to play with Scott’s guest post, all of which give a very cartoonish and colorful look to the ironically-described “oh-so-gritty streets” of New York City, the setting for Sideway. This aesthetic isn’t all that surprising given that the game takes place in a world conceived in tandem by the studio itself as well as Fuel Industries and W!ldbrain Entertainment, the latter of which is the Emmy-nominated entertainment studio that works on popular children’s television show Yo Gabba Gabba! and HBO animated series The Ricky Gervais Show and previously on an Esurance TV spot.

Not much else came along with Scott’s post, but he did mention that you will be playing as an underground street artist in New York City. You can expect to learn more at Playbrains’ panel at the New York Comic Con on October 8th at 2:15pm in Room 1A21 or by following the studio on Twitter.

This all seems very promising. The art direction of Sideway and the concept seems to mesh really well and already look pretty fantastic, albeit only in concept and composite form. Perhaps it’s only because I’m a sucker for platformers—especially for ones of the cartoonish sort—and that I have a PS3 and mildly disposable income for downloadable titles, but put me down for “excited.”
