StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Release Date Confirmed?

You may recall from the Platform Nation review of StarCraft 2 that the game released at the end of July this year is simply part one of a trilogy. So when can you get your hands on the second part?  Up until now, Blizzard have been tight lipped about it, but in an interview with Gamespot UK this week Battle.net project director Greg Canessa, drops a strong hint that 2012 is how long we’ll have to wait. OK so it’s not exactly a solid confirmation but it’s the closest thing we have to date.

When discussing such future Battle.net features as trading replays, broadcasting replays, and upgrading profiles, he said they were “a main area of focus we’re going to be seeing on the Starcraft [II] side over the next 18 months between now and Heart of the Swarm.”

18 Months! That means around April 2012.  Blizzard have since stressed to Gamespot that a release date has not been confirmed but what do you think?  Is almost 2 years too long to wait between parts of a trilogy?

    18 Months from the July 2010 release Does not put it April 2012………learn some math that’s 3 months off 18 months would put it at about Januray 2012 and this is only a speculation from blizzard…..they always have a thing with giving you a much later date then when they actually do it for example Star Craft 2 they estimated end of 2010 or begging 2011 just like Cata was suppose to be 1st quarter 2011 and is now november. So they will probably have it ready honestly around july-october 2011.

      good points but if you read the quote carefully it implies 18 months from the date of the quote which was made in October. October + 18 months is March/April 2012

      you’re an idiot, Blizzard is notorious for never making it’s release dates. Starcraft 2 was supposed to be out summer of ’07. And that was a quote from October, saying 18 months from “now”, not when SC2 was released.

        heres the real idiot 2012 is supposedly in december 21 so wed have some time with heart of the swarm b4 that, also who says the world will end in 2012? the mayan calender ends on that date but thats just like new years or the start of a new month

    wtf 18 months?!?! i dont think so. it took blizz 10 years to do sc2!this should be around 2013-2015.i dont agree though.id like it would be now in 2010 but its impossibile.blizz always makes very good games but always it takes them a lot

      after sc brood war blizzard focused on warcraft 3, world of warcraft & diablo 2 :P
      ..and about the expansions..i do want to be out in january,february 2011 but i fear they won’t give it…they working on wow cataclysm …and diablo 3 … i think after those games are launched and they’ll get some money from then we can expect the expansion for sc2 … but we’ll see

    it took blizzard 7 years and sc2 isnt thier only concern thier making diablo 2 as well and besides they have most of the art/units now so they only have to add story + new units/abilities and they already have battlenet ready.

      I agree, seeing as this is an expansion of SC2, there is a rather minimal amount of work to do when compared with with what it took to roll out Wings of Liberty.

    I think 2012 is to long to wait for a second part of a trilogy especially since all the core parts of the game have been made already. I can understand one year, but sadly knowing blizzard its going to be longer. I would put my money down for somewhere between march – June 2012.

    Here are some considerations:
    1. Quote says 18 months from *now* (Oct/2010) = this means 4/2012.
    2. Blizzard has a history of *extending* release dates to make a better product, not shortening them.
    3. The SC2 engine/art/units have already been made and Battle.net 2.0 is already up so most of the work would be making a new single player Zerg campaign, significantly reducing development time.
    4. Blizzard doesn’t release games too close together (so people will buy all and not have to choose). Diablo 3 will *probably* be out in 3rd quarter 2011.
    5. I think points 2 and 3 would cancel each other out making 1st or 2nd quarter 2012 a really good estimate for when SC2 would be released.

    We can all only speculate… But is 2 years too long? Well, for all of its RTS (+ Diablo 2) to date Blizzard always released expansions between 12 to 18 months after the original’s release date. Whereas ‘Heart of the Swarm’ is an expansion is debatable (since it’s the first game to be made for a trilogy), but it is similar: engine already done, need some upgrade, essentially work on the campaign and not release games to close to each others. So if it’s released within 2 years after the ‘Wings of Liberty’ release date, it’s a bit longer than usual but not that surprising. I don’t think it’ll take a lot longer than that though, I also think first quarter 2012 is a good estimate.

    I don’t care how long I’ll have to wait for any of Blizzard’s titles. It’s always addictive, great and balanced — anything a gamer needs to waste “some” time. So go out and play until the next game comes out :) ! Still, if I have to squeeze my point of view in, I’d say that 2012 looks alright. All of blizzard’s marketing is observed and calculated so they can make the biggest of profits. They wouldn’t release a game too soon. People need to get bored, then BOOM. Add a logical rotation to that (Cataclysm now, Diablo 3 has to be next), and then you have SC2 xpac.. It’s more than a year away for sure, despite all else. Perhaps it’s even already done or “on the way”, but they have it all planned for the releases, don’t worry… as if they needed more money but who am I to talk :P

    I bought wings of liberty 22nd of december and been playing it through holidays and allready completed the story on brutal. I’m enojying it with every cell of my body. atm I’m playing online and also enjoying it. But to answer to the question yes I also think that 2 years is bit too long. Maybe next fall (october, november) if it’s possible. It’s extremely addicting but at the same time because it’s so addicting your going to get bored to it faster (tho getting bored to SC2 is going to take a long, long time.)

    Dear Blizz,
    This is what I want in SC2:HotS:
    1. New Units
    This shouldn’t be too hard for Terran seeing as half the units in the campaign were unplayable in Multiplayer.
    2. Double the Maps
    By 2012 we will have every strategy for every map and will probably be bored of them, in return make the map preferences 6 instead of 3.
    3. More Challenges
    With new units/strategies I hope there will be more
    4. More Achievements/Portraits/Decals
    While obviously there will be new achievements I hope to see more Portraits and Decals because if it does come out in 2012 most dedicated gamers will have the most of the portraits/decals.

    Thats about all I can think of right now.

    Blizzard always takes way too long. For a trilogy like this they shouldn’t be more than a year apart.

    blizzard has half the money on the world, I mean come on…whatever reason they “have” to release the fucking second campaign 2 years later it must be fake dumb and ridicoulus. we know how capitalism works but this is just stupid. Blizzard clearly misuses the trust and loyalty of it’s fans, squeezing every cent of them, also being the greatest asses for banning LAN. I live in a country where the 3 games cost my montly payment. fuck me, no cookies for me! I’ll go and pick some cotton right away master.

    okay ive seen enough of this, people say SC2 wont come out for another year because diablo 3 is in the way…blizzard isnt one giant building were everyone makes one game at a time the team making SC and diablo and even wow are all seperate, we will see heart of the swarm when SCs team is done with it not when diablo 3 is over with

    personally i think they should give hydras more health or damage, or allow u to get them early.
    And with protoss… give them some good units for once. Archons used to reck, now they suck.
    Terran is op.

    I have to agree with joe here. The teams working on SC2 is a different team but i think in technical issues like graphics designing effects and artwork is the same. I think thats how they work. But HotS must be released in 2011. They can’t let people wait too long. The market is bigger now and a lot of games are being released. Blizz doesn’t want gamers to get bored with SC2 and they will release it shortly after Diablo. They have to give us something new. Back in the days of SC1 and Warcraft 3 they didn’t have the competition they have now and all the game consoles taking gamers away from PC. But as from experience February-April 2012 is my estimate.

    I believe that 2012 is a solid date, especially with the recent games that have been released (cataclysm) as well as what they are developing right now. As we speak, i believe that they are thinking/creating Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void AS WELL AS Diablo III. next is whaty they decide to do with Diablo III, same as brood war where you can chat with WCIII + Diablo players? or not, as well as marketing prices.

    i personally dont WANT it to be 2012, but what can we do?

    I hope Raynor manages to survive that long …. :) 18 months is a long time in space .
    All the multiplayer options are good and dandy but can’t they be updated in after release patches. Personally i enjoy the epic saga … and this game is taking longer than Lord of the rings for crying out loud.

    The movie parallel is a newbish one. We are talking about making a campaign for a done game.

    Sure, some 3d artists are probably sweating and a few voice actors had to clock in for work.
    Ohh, and of course some balancing with new units and whatnot – thats it.

    No way that would take 2 years, are we supposed to wait another 2 years for the third campaign?! 

    Think about it 5 to 6 years for the complete Starcraft 2 game?!?!I smell cash cow feces and I really feel fooled.
    Blizzard is going the way of all the other companies today; milking the shait out of any and all willing.Damn shame.

      Blizzard has always put out games when they felt they were satisfied with the quality of their products.  And never, ever before.  I get heart burn about the delays as well (think the year long postponements the original Starcraft and Warcraft 3 had).  however.  You NEVER can say Blizzard doesn’t give you a quality game for your money.  I have no issue with paying the money for Heart of the Swarm.  Its going to be as good as anything else they have released.  It does bum me out that I have to wait another 6 months.  but I have no doubt that you won’t have to wonder what they used those 6 months for.

    i find waiting for 18 months is a long time but i would rather have a good game than a game riddled with bugs. let blizzard take as much time as they need

    great. blizzard doesnt make money be making games. they  make their money selling razor that we need to shave our beards while waiting for their ridicoulosly slow game-making. but, hell, their games are still awesome

    2 years of wait and what? 20 missions…. it simply shows they not even working on it… and thats look back.. sc1 came out in 1996, expansion in 1998, 12 years later they finally release sc2 and… lets wait another 6 years for it to complete its story….. okay…i’ve seriousely had it with u blizzard… lets face it… sc2 suck ballz for a game thats been developing for 12 years…

      Wow you are so ignorant that i think you didn’t even post anything true. Nobody said 2 years of waiting. Nobody said anything about only 20 missions. SC1 came out in 1998 and BW 8 months later in us and in march 99 in europe. SC2 was not developed in 12 years but since 2005.And where does SC2 sucks? Maybe you suck buddy.
