Game Review: Whiteboard HD
Developer: Avici Software
Available Platforms: iPad
ESRB Rating: 4+
Whiteboard HD is one of the many utilities that are available on the iPad. As the name suggests this is a whiteboard for for your iPad.
The app allows you to draw basic shapes from a template or you can use your finger to create any shape or pattern that you like. You can add or remove text boxes to act as labels for any of your shapes which is ideal if you want to create a flow diagram. If you work for a business you can set the background to your corporate logo or use any other image for the iPad’s library. The Whiteboard HD app even allows for you to connect the iPad to a digital projector (if you have the required cable) so if passing the iPad from person to person isn’t feasible you can give a presentation to the entire room at once. You can even export your slide in several different ways to share it with others.
While the app does do exactly what you would expect from a white board it seems a waste of the technology as it is basically no more advanced that a sheet of paper or a chalkboard. If I can hook up the iPad to a projector why can’t I add animation or play a movie/music from the iTunes playlist? I have seen digital whiteboards in schools and offices and while these systems can and do cost thousands they offer so much more. Why can’t an iPad app offer at least some of the same or similar functionality?
The iPad is a strange device, is it an e-reader, movie player, giant iPod, internet browser, personal appliance or business utility? It is all and neither. Whiteboard HD is one of the many apps that are designed to be utilities. Unfortunately it gives no more additional features or functionally than MS Paint. From a business perspective, if you were going to the effort of setting up a projector wouldn’t it make more sense to use a laptop which has several other features that an iPad cannot offer? Without the projector it is not practical for a large number of people. Whiteboard HD would be useful as a free app but there really isn’t enough here to justify any price tag.
