Unsung Heroes – Vol. 8

Hello my fellow Platform Nation readers and welcome to my little slice of the internet where I give shout outs to the people, places, and things that make video games fun to play. This week’s showcase is a special little fury critter that we all know and love. He comes out once a year during April to fill all the Easter Baskets around the world. Yes, I’m talking about the Easter Bunny, this week’s Unsung Hero. Now I know what you’re thinking, “The Easter Bunny?!?!? WTF Brian???” Well Let me explain..

As I said before, the Easter Bunny comes out once a year. He travels around the globe delivering Easter Eggs on Easter which is in April. But that’s only one night. He needs something else to do during the rest of the year and that’s where he comes into the situation at hand. When it’s not Easter time, the Easter Bunny hides lots of “other” Easter Eggs in our video games! That’s right. You heard it here first.

How many times have you been playing through a game and came across something so clever or well hidden that you were like, “Woah! Sweet!!”? Well this is all thanks to Peter Cotontail. After Easter is over, he needs to stay in shape so he scored a job with the video game developers hiding all sorts of goodies in our games. Now don’t go getting him mistaken with Gnome Cobbwinkle, he hides the collectable items. The Easter Bunny doesn’t hide items that you need to find, he just adds some fun things that if you are quick witted and have a keen eye, you just might find something interesting in your game. Here are some examples:

  • Battlefield Bad Company 2 – Sweetwater, “If this was a snowmobile race. I would take you down!” Haggard, “It’s not a snowmobile… Snowmobiles are for sissies!” – this is clearly a jab at Modern Warfare 2 as is this funny little line – Sweetwater, “They’ll just send in some special ops douchebags with pussy-ass heart sensors on their guns instead of us.”
  • Wolverine Origins – There is a reference to Warcraft in the game. It’s even a secret achievement if you can find it. It’s a skeleton of Arthus lying next to the sword, Frostmourne. You will find this in an ice cave after you get the adamantium for your skeleton and leave the weapon x facility.
  • Final Fantasy I – “Here Lies Link” is written on a tombstone outside of an Inn in the town of Elfhiem. This is obviously a fun jab at the little green clothed hero of the Legend of Zelda series.

The list goes on and on of the things that the Easter Bunny has hidden all throughout our video games. The next time you are playing a game, keep your eyes open and your ears peeled as you never know when you might run across a well placed Easter Egg.

Easter Bunny, I Salute You!

Now bring me lots of chocolate next Easter!!!
