10- Fallout New Vegas: Let’s be clear. On a purely technical level, this is a horrible game. It’s broken in a way I haven’t experienced from a top-tier release in a LONG time. The thing is, I couldn’t stop playing it regardless of this cold, hard fact. New Vegas is an amazing tale- compelling in a way that few other games were this year, while surpassing Fallout 3 in the process. I lived in this world for over a month, and I can’t wait to jump back in for a second run.
9- Limbo: When you first press A, and make the boy open his eyes, you know exactly how the game is going to end. That doesn’t stop you from going full-tilt through the three-hour journey, often banging your head against the wall, and coming back for seconds. Limbo sucks you into it’s world, and leaves you saying to yourself “I KNEW IT!” with a big smile on your face.
8- Bayonetta: I don’t know what the hell this game was about, but I loved every minute of it. Bayonetta reminds you that third person action titles can still feel fresh and innovative, even in today’s day and age. It’s like Platinum tapped directly into my head with this one- blood, guts, fast-paced violence, and a sexy protagonist who’s REQUIRED to be naked to perform several of her special attacks.
7- Singularity: This is one that was sadly overlooked during it’s release, and I’m sure will be overlooked once again during game of the year talks. It’s a shame, because while Singularity doesn’t reinvent the donkey wheel (all my Lost fam out there will understand), it stood heads and tails above a majority of the fps’s released this year. With it’s well-fleshed-out world, characters, and gripping narritive, Singularity is one I’ll revist every year or so.
6- Super Meat Boy: God damn you to hell, Super Meat Boy. DAMN YOU! These days, you really have to comb the internet to find hard-core platformers. It’s an art form that has sorely been lacking from the mainstream for a good long while now. So, it’s with a glass raised to Team Meat, that I say thanks, and fingers crossed this will lead to a rebirth of the genre.
