Right now is an amazing time to be a fan of both video games and comic books. Looking for a little crossover between your two hobbies? If you’re not already, here’s what you should be reading.
Gears Of War: currently set between the first and second game, this series does a great job of telling interesting stories that add to the fiction without feeling trivial, nor giving you the sense of “If I don’t read this, I won’t understand jack in the games themselves.” An all-around awesome, gory comic.
Assassin’s Creed The Fall: Ok, I’m a huge AC fan, and I’m a huge fan of both Stewart and Kerschl, the creative talent behind this book. The Fall focuses on a new Animus subject (kind of), as well as a new setting: Russia, the early 1900’s. While it would help to be a fan of the AC mythology, you’d still get a good amount of enjoyment coming into this one cold. Highly recommended.
Mass Effect Redemption, Evolution (coming soon): Redemption was a fun read when it first came out, and I felt it served a great bridge between the first two games. Then, the Shadow Broker dlc came out, and I felt it was a solid nod and payoff to the story. Solid fun. And now, we’ve got Evolution on the way soon, which gives us some much-needed back story on the Illusive Man. Can’t wait.
Silent Hill Past Life: Maybe the biggest surprise for me on this list. Both the games, and the comics in the Silent Hill universe have left a lot to be desired for me over the past two years. That changed with Past Life. The book delves DEEP into the history of the town, and the art is maybe the best fit for a Silent Hill story I’ve seen since Ben Templesmith. Check this one out if you’re a fan of the series, or horror.
