Do You Play Kinect…By Yourself?

"Hello, John. Did you have a good day at work?"

One of my buddies brought his Kinect over last weekend. I had never used it before, but was intrigued nonetheless after being inundated by Microsoft’s advertising. We had fun laughing at each other during Dance Central (the Teapot is the bane of my existence), racing down river in Kinect Adventures, and we even played fetch with a Black Panther in Kinectimals.

He left the Kinect at my place so he wouldn’t have to pack it up  again. I fired it up on Monday thinking about all the fun I was about to have… then a sense of awkwardness swept over me. I tried to shake it off as I played a couple of  minigames in Adventures. I thought playing fetch with my Black Panther would pick me up, but things got weird when he wanted to be rubbed. Dance Central? Forget about it–Doing the Club Monster in “Pokerface” made me look around to see if someone was watching.

Imagine that in an empty room. Something doesn't feel right.

I don’t feel that way when I play “normal” games, so why do I feel like this with the Kinect? All week, the Kinect camera has been staring at me from just below my TV. I’m starting to get the feeling that the Kinect is watching me and my life is going to turn into a Portal episode.

Have you played the Kinect by yourself? Do you get weirded out, or is it just me?

  • The fun is definitely multiplied exponentially when you have someone to play with.

  • the only Kinect ‘games’ i am comfortable playing on my own are the exercise ones.

  • Jesus. What EXACTLY do you feel weird about? Why does anyone feel “uncomfortable” playing a game? If there’s nobody there to see it, why do you care how the game controls?

Kinect Sports is excellent fun in single player mode. Soccer is challenging, beating your best scores at bowling is fun…and its a decent workout. Is it just Kinect, or do you feel the same with Move? DanceDanceRevolution? Guitar Hero? Rock Band?

Stop worrying about how you look to people that AREN’T THERE, and just have fun!

I probably wouldn’t play DDR by myself either.

I’d compare it to eating penut butter out of the jar. It’s just as delicious, but you know it’s not how it was meant to be consumed.
