D&D: Daggerdale Preview

D&D has a new video game planned for this year, Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale. According to the official site, Daggerdale will be an easy to pick up action RPG, focusing on hack n’ slash game play with the promise of swords, sorcery, monsters and treasure. Everything a D&D player could want.

The game promises to be both single player and co-op for up to four players online as well as offering split-screen co-op for two, allowing for friends to join in the action from the same sofa.

This adventure is taking place in the continent of Faerûn, the setting for the Forgotten Realms campaigns. Daggerdale focuses on the struggle to defeat the evil Rezlus and his henchmen as they try to conquer and take the Dalelands for their own. The game will take you to many locations, ranging from the Desertsmouth Mountains, to the Mines of Tethyamar and the Tower of the Void. Along with the many different levels the game will boast a variety of magic spells, feats, and powers to combat the enemies you will encounter as you continue to progress through the story.

As many may know Atari is still running and refining the now free to play MMO Dungeons & Dragons Online, however this hasn’t stopped them from wanting to add new games to the D&D universe.

“The Dungeons & Dragons franchise remains a priority for Atari as we continue to build upon the ever-evolving narrative with Dungeons & Dragons Daggerdale” says Jim Wilson, President and CEO of Atari, Inc. “As the first D&D cross-platform digital download title we look forward to expanding the franchise to a growing gaming audience.”

What appeals to me in this upcoming D&D game is its promised simplicity. I enjoy RPG games like Dragon Age: Origins, which focuses on complicated combat and character customizations but I rarely finish them, simply due to the length of the game and the hours of required fetch quests to get back into combat.

With this promised title it sounds like the action will kick off right from the beginning and not let up, while still allowing for character growth and customization. As of the moment there is no announced release date, the only information offered is that it will become available in 2011, so we may have to wait a while longer for this game to be released for digital download. All I can say is once Daggerdale is released, you will know where to find me.

  • A couple of comments:

D&D Daggerdale is a cooperative Role Play Game

Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited is developed and operated by Turbine Inc (a subsidary of Warner Brothers Interactive) under license from Atari.

And a follow up… Since the game is being developed by Cryptic Studios (a subsidary of Atari) who have yet to fully develop and run a successful online game (see Star Trek and Champions) don’t get your hopes up that this game will be successful.

  • Where do you see Cryptic? It’s being made by Bedlam Games

  • Cryptic? WTF, its being done by bedlam

  • Let’s all hope that it’s better than the “looks good but bugged to uselessness” that “Descent to Undermountain” was.
