Teaser Trailer For Upcoming Zombie Game “Dead Island”

Okay, zombies are everywhere. Television. Books. Games. Movies. Battling plants on our front lawns. Some may be tired of them, but I think there’s something that will forever freak humans out about loved ones coming back, and not for hugs and kisses. Dead Island looks like it’s gonna add a whole lot of character-driven story into all the zombie mayhem. And if this trailer doesn’t make you want to hug your children (or anyone of personal importance) then check that pulse, because you may have already become one of the undead legion. Read on after the video for IGN‘s brief preview description of the game and an interesting tidbit from Wikipedia. I know it’s early to judge, but with a trailer this powerful, this may just be the kick-in-the-pants the zombie genre is in need of.

Dead Island is a non-linear first-person shooter in which you find yourself on an island plunged into chaos. It’s a place where the word “dead” has an entirely new meaning. Face the nightmare and fight for survival.

Use anything you find in your surroundings as a weapon. Make decisions that influence the entire world around you, take advantage of opponent behavior and game physics, and explore the secrets hidden in the darkest regions of the island.

I know Wikipedia can’t be always trusted (believe me, I’m an English major and have had that particular warning stuffed down my throat tenfold) but if they’re right about some of these points, color me excited.

* The game features a sandbox style gameplay on a tropical island.
* The zombie style and the story are massively influenced by George A Romero’s movies.
* The game is focused on melee combat, the player can pick up almost anything and use it as a weapon.
* There are multiple playable characters.
* 4 Player drop in/out Co-Op

Could this be the new Left 4 Dead? Hopefully we’ll find out this year, as the game is still in development with plans for a 2011 release date. I, for one, can’t wait for my zombie island getaway.
