“Big picture,” however, meaning their “big picture mode” and not some sort of grand scheme, though it’s possible there’s more to this press release than meets the eye.
Valve released a little gem today at GDC via this press release that revealed their latest enhancement to Steam: big picture mode. It’s what Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve, calls “gaming opportunities for Steam partners and customers…via PCs and Macs on any TV or computer display in the house,” an apparent response to a demand from users for Steam to be available in more places. Time to pony up for some home theatre upgrades, eh?
And maybe it’s because I’m a total sucker for behind the scenes sorts of stuff, Valve also detailed a bit of what they’d be talking about at GDC this year, including what they learned works and doesn’t work in Steamworks Microtransactions and how those lessons can better inform their partners in their in-game economies, Steam integration across multiple platforms (specifically working Steam into Portal 2 on Mac and PS3 simultaneously), and more of what’s in store for Steamworks. I can’t wait!
